A buddy of uses 2 screens back to back. he said they hold more but I went back to one. Just did my first cleaning and both screens were coated with brown algae.

so far nitrates have gone from 20 ppm to 10 ppm. Everything else is the same. 55 gal corner tank. its a new tank with only 2 fish so Im not sure if I have enough stocked to get really good growth from what I understand. Here is day 7 right before I cleaned.

Single layer screens are better for most people; double layers are no longer recommended.

So I cleaned the screen and its already coated with that brown gunk again. Do I clean it now or do I wait the full 7 days?

just wanted to give an update. I came home from work today and algae has started to grow all over the rocks. I re-read the faq and this is from phosphate leaking out from the rocks now?

Probably

If nutrients read zero, and there is no growth on plastic parts in the tank, and the growth on the rocks is mostly on the areas sticking out, and your scrubber is growing well, then probably.

nutrients are way down. Im down to 5ppm nitrates and phosphates are almost at zero the color doesnt match anything on the card from the test kit but the algae seems to mainly be growing on the piece of live rock I bought to seed all my dry rock. Im just gonna wait and see if it gets better.
