Over the months I was battling my GHA, I noticed that I'd lost a lot of color in my SPSs.

As my GHA started to fade out I did see some improvements on a most pieces, others continued to brown.

So I began reading on causation. The brown is simply excess Zooxanthella algae in their tissue, and is an intentional effort by the coral to take advantage of:

A. High nutrient levels in the water column
B. Low light levels

As certain corals began to color up as my DT algae dissipated I assumed it was nutrient related and became frustrated that despite my efforts I'd have to live with sone brown corals.

It did not occur to me at the time that my lighting was the cause.

During my battle with the GHA, I had reduced my DT photoperiod to just six hours.

I have been increasing that slowly over the last two days and have already noticed a significant improvement in coloration.

If brown corals are an issue for you, and you nutrients are low, increase you're DT light hours. Make sure you do it slowly though; one hr per day max.

It's the same as with scrubber growth: Weaker light give darker algae.
