Hello!
I write from Italy, I have a 1100-liter aquarium, and I recently adopted the filter algae. I have no problems with filamentous algae in the main tank, but being a habitat with non zooxanthellae, I need to feed constantly, and I adopted the philosophy of the aquarium without a skimmer ... I set up the filter with 4 105W CFL lamps (40 cm long and weighing about 2 kg each) 2700 ° 6400 ° k and k. .. I hope you like my set-up.
ps: sorry for my bad english

You should be able to feed very large amounts... probably the equivalent of 40 cubes a day.

wow 40 cubes a day :)
the canvas in less than a week is already covered with a thin layer of green algae ... When this layer is thicker ... I will start to feed larger :)

Looking good!! What is your reason for not running any substrate in that tank? I do not really like substrate myself because its harder to clean if you have to do so. On the other hand it can be a good home to some of those small critters. I do not run much if any substrate in most of my FW but I always run a couple inch's in my SW just for the sake of the little critters.

I can give you the answer: Stefano was really fed up with its DSB. That f*****g DSB never starded (in about two years), it was expensive and heavy to build (made of calcium carbonate, as to say crushed calcite); it was extremely heavy to be brought away  (my backbone still remembers such job :D !); i tried to watch some samples under SEM (http://www.aiamitalia.it/forum/viewtopi ... hilit=+SEM (http://www.aiamitalia.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1862&hilit=+SEM)) finding no bacteria at all, and a wrong kind of sand, poor selected and with an excess of clay-sized matrix (=dust) although washed and washed again befor layering. Such sand was considered up-to-date here for about a pair of years, but i believe it was just a swindle. In such a tank, a lot of dust started wrapping live rocks and animals; after the DSB removal the situation is going better but rocks are still loosing dust from pores, so Stefano is waiting for a complete purge of rocks. After that, may be an inch or a bit less of fine gravel will cover the bottom glass; we agree it is not so nice the bare bottom :) !

My SW substrate has a lot of life in it. I am going to be setting up a new SW tank in the future and considered not have having much or any substrate like I do in my FW tanks. Seeing it will have a scrubber is there any concerns of no substrate in a reef/fish mixed tank?

substrate allows biodiversity and lot of critters, if made with proper sand and well populated since the scratch. Fishes find lot of food in the bottom. But many invertebrates like streams difficult to maintain with fine sand. Well, we are experiencing mediterranean coldwater, we don't have great experience in tropical tanks, may be different.

May be an effect of light: if you watch to the first pic you can see the green wires spread on the white sink. It is the same kind of algae I have in my tank  and I hope to transfer them onto my screen increasing the light. Moreover may be that's because we have different species of algae, they are not the same as what you are used to, because our tanks are filled only with water, sand, rocks and specimens coming from northern Mediterranean sea and run at 17°C (62.6°F), no relationships then with tropical liverocks, sand or corals bringing spores.

Is this a 100% NPS tank? I have had a few questions about anyone running an NPS algae scrubber.

rossigeologo
10-26-2011, 02:18 PM
Yes. Or, better, white gorgonians are zoox. bearing but they can live very well also without them; without strong light they need more feeding.

ehm.. sorry, I'm writing on behalf of my friend Stefano because he doesn't have much time at the moment.

Tell me, with the scrubber on the system, have you had to do any water changes?

How much are you feeding?

Are you feeding a liquid coral food?

Do you have any fish in the system?

I love NPS corals...so pretty

hi Floyd,
no water changes....

much are you feeding?

daily...
6-10 cubes of frozen lobster eggs, mysys, adult brine shrimp,
brine shrimp
half a liter of phytoplancon
reef snow
black pouder

Are you feeding a liquid coral food?

no, sometimes I prepare a homogenate of fresh fish

Do you have any fish in the system?

5 mullets and one damselfih...
I glean what the fishermen discard networks, in the ports of the French Riviera, do not choose anything, I collect what I find, if possible alive, and small fish that take with fishing rod

I love NPS corals...so pretty

thank you...

Awesome! Can you post some updated pictures?

Have you tested your Nitrates and Phosphates recently?

I attended MACNA last year (since it was in my town) and as a club member I spent most of the time running around helping out, but I managed to attend Gary Parr's lecture on NPS tanks. He had great looking pics of his NPS corals, and while he didn't consider himself an NPS expert, he did maintain a system of his own and had many things to share about general husbandry of NPS. I was floored to find out that in addition to running all kinds of filtration, he also did nearly daily PWCs to keep nutrients in line.

green :)
this is one week grow..

this is the type of algae that grows on the canvas after two weeks ..
I remind you that my system uses 4 lamps 105w (real consumption) 2600 ° k

Thank you,
it is not easy to manage an aquarium med, low temperatures (15-18 ° C) and a lot of food, the only system to minimize the pollutants, is the use of a scrub. :)

Hello Stefano,

at first I wish you a happy new year! 2nd: You have a very nice tank. I tried to start a mediterranean tank in the summer of 2013 too. I've mixed in some Shrimps, Fishes, Snails & Mussels from the Baltic Sea and some Anemones from the North Sea. All starts fine, but now I have a lot of trouble with red and green slime Algaes. They overgrow my yellow crust Anemones which I captured last summer in Croatia. They are shrinking more and more. If things go bad further with the slime Algaes I think I will lose them. My Anemonia virdis and my Actinia fragacea are not amused and contract thier tentacles.

Your approach with an Algae scrubber gives me new hope to get things in the right direction, that means no slime Algaes and no problems with the Anemones. Other approaches using the help of bacterias (e.g. DSB, Vodka method etc.) aren't helpful because the metabolisim of the bacteria slows down the colder the water is. If I understand all of your posts, you use an Algae Scrubber at 16°C and it works very well?
Did youd seed the Algaes in your tank e.g. with Liverock from the Mediterranean Sea including the Algaes you want to house in your Scrubber or did they come "by themselfes"?

Kind regards

Oliver

eyeinthesky,

I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if you still have this tank with algae scrubber and if it still works the same. Is the scrubber able to keep up long term with the heavy feeding. I want to do a nps tank myself and I know they require very heavy feeding. By the way Beautiful Tank!
