What are the practical limitations on narrow, tall scrubbers? Why can't I build a scrubber 24" tall and 2" wide if I want to? I realize that nobody actually does this but has anyone explored the limits of this? What goes wrong? Obviously, for CFLs, you want a more or less square screen but has anyone ever tried to build one based around a vertical linear fluorescent tube?

Yes you can do that. Would have low circulation with the tank.

I think some problems we face is to fit the scrubber under the tank in the stand and to be able to remove the screen easily. It would get harder to fit and clean the higher the scrubber is.

I had a horizontal one which was about 5 inches wide and 36 inches long & fitted under the hood of a tank. It worked well enough. Had to scrap it because of condensation in the hood in the end but it'd probably still be going were it not for that.

It does mean you can use much less flow per square inch.
