Scrubbers and Alk...

Hey we got a question on RC about a tank with issues keeping alk up, I seem to remember this occurs when the tank is limited in some ways, the scrubber can start to use alk but I just cant remember why? anyone care to help jog my memory?

If there is very strong scrubber growth in a short time, it can use alk in order to obtain carbon to grow, since water does not hold much CO2.
