Can I just put the screen above the tank other than in the sump?

That's what the picture is. You have to have some way of catching the water. If you mean having the water/screen flow directly into the top of the display, your lights are going to light up the whole room.

So that I can use the light of the tank to light the screen as well. :)

If you do that it's going to get tricky. Splashing, proper flow, proper light, ease of cleaning, safety. I have only seen one done properly:

Best best is to use a bucket or box.

In fact I have a top box filter. I want to direct the water from the filter to the algae screen. Do you think if it is effective?
