Well after having some issues with my newer scrubber(new guideline) I decided to play around with my filtration. I was very happy with everything years ago when I first set up a old-school weak scrubber and was slowly taking my skimmer off line,,at that time I had macros in my sump as well as in my main display. This may sound crazy but I did enjoy having some macros and GHA in my display. So here is what I did. I made my screen a full sheet 8.5"x11" and I put only one 12watt led gro-bulb per side. I returned my skimmer to service but only for 6 hours per day. My goal Is to be able to keep macros in the main display,,have crystal clear water(no tint/less particals) ,but still have enough natural food for corals in the water. I know this sounds like a tall order,,but I feel It can be done. Does anybody here do anything like this?

Why not just run an full on waterfall so its able to keep up in case of accidental circumstances. You can always run the scrubber light less hours and the DT more and have algae grow in it. If I let my (40G) DT lights (DIY LED's) stay on longer then usual I start to get algae hair and bubble algae growing in my tank in a few places. I will then correct this by knock the DT lighting down by a few hours a day. I like to run my DT lights from 5:00AM when I get up to about 9:00-10:00PM when I go to bed. I have a very strong scrubber so I dont get much algae poping up in the DT. When I do I pluck until I get tired of doing that and change my hours to 9AM to 6PM for a month or until the algae is gone from the DT.

I enjoyed having macros in my display. That's one thing I miss with a scrubber.

that is a good point kerry,,,,better to have it and not need it than to not have it and need it:)
