Had a old skimmer laying around so I decided to try and mod it for a UAS.
Been running a couple of days and it looks promising so far.

23W flood light about 8" away for 14hours single sided
Feeding 1 cube a day
1.5" x 8" screen, I think I will need to make the screen wider with the increased feeding(was 1/4 cube)

You need to turn off the light for a certain period every day. This enables the algae to grow properly. You may want to move the spotlight in a bit closer as well.

I am also using a repurposed CPR skimmer - with some LED's for the light.

Huh? From what I read, he is running 14 on / 10 OFF for lighting.. so I am confused why you are telling the OP they need to turn the light off for a certain period each day when it is already off for 10 hours a day.

He probably read it wrong.. but I do agree that 8" away is too far.

Im worried about burning it using the 23W bulb with the recommended as 12W

I have used 23 Watt CFL's 2 to 3 inches from a screen and never had any burning.

Its always better to have higher watts.. you can cut back on hours if growth is yellow or burning.

I read it wrong. 14 hrs per day should be OK.

How did this project turn out? I also have a CPR backpack and am interested in an ATS.

I've become very interested in this project. Can you guys give me some guidance on what kind of LED lighting kit I could use?

Hey Santa Monica,

It seems to me that the light half of your suction cup HOG along with some custom sized roughed up screen would get this job done pretty nicely. Seems to me that I would just need to drop a lid on top of the CPR where the collection cup used to go.

What do you think? If you think it would work, do you think you could sell me a special package of just the light half of the HOG along with a custom sized roughed up material?

Oh, and I'm assuming there isn't any problem with the fact that skimmer bubbles are super small compared to the HOG's larger bubbles?

You can get the light-half in the parts section of the HOG.5

If you can make the bubbles larger, it would help.

Any update? I like the idea.

Naw, I don't have an update at all. I've gotten into other things including international travel and other such time consuming matters. I might be able to return to putting together my reef setup sometime in the next 36 months if I'm lucky. That's life I guess.

Well international travel is sure more interesting than a CPR repurposed skimmer!
