View Full Version : Could I have fried a bunch of my LEDs?

I thought hey, why don't I use a 9v battery to test my LEDs, because basically EVERYONE has mentioned bad LEDs no matter who you buy them from it seems.

So I tried searching on here. No one mentions how they test them.
So I figure, 9v battery for a smoke detector, direct current, should work.

Plugged it up to 1 LED and it flashed. Then the LED wouldn't turn on again.

Okay...

So I soldered a chain of LEDs together, like 6 or so.
Hooked them up to my driver (the 35-700 from Rapid LED).
They all flashed once, then turned off and won't light back up.

What's the problem?
Do I need a resistor or something?

I would guess you fried it with a 9v battery. But if they flashed with the driver, that is a good sign. You need at least 8 LEDs in a row to test them with that driver, anything less and they won't work. To test individual LEDs you need 2 AA batteries (3v), not 3x that power (9v).

Well... What about when I plugged them up to the actual driver and they fried?

The driver has built in protection, if there is too little or too many LEDs it won't fire up (just flash).

9v minimum output, so 6 LEDs should have worked fine if their Vf was 2V.

I think you blew them up by testing with a 9v battery.

Fixed it :)
I did blow a few reds. My scrubber is built, pics incoming soon.
