View Full Version : No nitrates, but phos rising.
How do you deal with that?
Can you post more details about the system? SantaMonica will state your lighting is not strong enough. Give us details and let's ee how we can help
All, as size of tank, to size of scrubber will make a difference. Upflow, waterfall, size, lighting period, lighting quantity and type, water/air flow all have a bearing, so the more information provided, the better the help for you :)
2ft cube approx 200L after displacement. 8x24w t5 lighting on 10 hours a day.
2 Cinnamon clowns - 2" / 1.5"
1 Midas blenny
1 chalk goby
1 small yellow tang
1 small regal tang
Tmc v2 400 protein skimmer.
Waterfall turf scrubber screen is 6x8" lit 18/6 by 20w cfl bulb, 1 each side. With reflectors. 1000 l/hr pump on it.
Your screens only been going a few weeks, and the growth (guessing) is probably not upto the job yet. How did you used to control phos? I would continue it until you get some decent growth on the screen (once again guessing without any pics to look at).
A reactor. Nitrates are undetectable though so phos can't drop?
Actually algae can grow straight off ammonia (actually preferred) before it turns into nitrates, but that's a side issue. I would run GFO to keep it down for now, but others may not agree with this.

Check Potassium, use Salifert kit, dose if below 400. All tanks I have tested that run a scrubber have K below 350. All that don't have K above 380. scrubbers uptake K.

What product do you use to dose potassium?
Thanks I will do that. Happen to have a good kit, the kz one.
For the above post. Kz do a good potassium supplement.

I read that the KZ kit was good, then the review I read on the Elos kit said the Elos kit was better, so I got one. I discovered the Elos kit was horridly ridiculous, and the Salifert kit was super easy and reliable.
I use Brightwell Potassion-P for now.

GFO worked for me. Once my nitrates ran out the phosphates started creeping up. The screen still grows, I find I don't need to clean it as often, and it probably helps the GFO last longer as well.
