Just wanted to drop in a suggestion for improvement in a growing surface.

How about using wide heavty duty velcro stuck onto the regular craft canvas we usually use:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Heavy-Duty-VELCRO-Stick-On-Adhesive-Tape-/250803902715?ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

Sent off for some and will see which surface works best, the sticky or the grippy.

Advantages should be:
ROUGHER SURFACE FOR ALGAE TO ATTATCH EASIER
SAVE TIME ROUGHING UP
COULD BE ATTACHED TO CANVAS WE CURRENTLY USE
OR, CAN BE GLUED ONTO OTHER SURFACES SUCH AS GLASS, ACRYLIC,ETC
COULD BE USED ON NON-FLAT SURFACES IF NEDED

Just dropping it in as a suggestion...

The only issue I have with that idea is the adhesive. I'd find some used for clothing that doesn't have the adhesive and then mechanically fasten it to the screen. Looks like a nice way to avoid the screen roughing part :) Oh but light transfer thrugh the material might be an issue. Maybe there's whit velcro that would allow light to filter through.

Several people have tried velcro, but I've not heard back from any other them.

clear medical grade material is what I would recommend, specifically the type without adhesive (which has not been tested to be reef safe) and only the 'hook' side (not the fabric-like loop side).

Finding sheets of that grade at less than obscene prices per square foot is the trick.
