Are you going to put a fan and a ventilation hole?

ShanGo

yes i am not finished yet :D

SantaMonica

Of course if you don't want evaporation or cooling, you won't need one. That would also help keep the light from leaking out.

ShanGo

tomorrow will post the finish version of the fiberglass

there is 9 of them

kcress
08-19-2009, 03:20 AM
Ah! Ok I see that in your drawing. I was actually thinking fiber glass and was confused since it already looks fiber glassed.

ShanGo
08-23-2009, 11:02 AM
have to rethink as i cant get my hand in to glue glass so going to make 2 perpex box for the screens and lamps go in box so when i need to change lamps i take
out the perpex box

kcress
08-23-2009, 11:47 AM
Remember too that the glass facing the screen will get wet and will need to be cleaned. If you can't reach that surface you will have a problem.

ShanGo

thats y i am changing abit as i have 3in of space in the perpex box easy to clean and easy to replace lamps
as i will take the perpex box out :D

kcress

So the acrylic box will have it's outer face facing the water and will be easy to clean once it's removed. Great!

Was going to do it the other way put the screens in the perpex box then when i clean the screens i clean the box what do you think

kcress
08-24-2009, 01:24 PM
I think your latter scheme is much better as you don't have to mess with the lights each time.

ShanGo
09-14-2009, 01:47 PM
Had to do some mod on the box as i could not glue the glass in place as soon as i get the rest i will post it so you can see :)

So let me try to get this straight..
You are going to glue in the glass boxes?
The screens hang in the glass boxes?
How does the water get out of the glass boxes? Out thru the holes in the bottom? How do you seal the glass holes to the fiberglass box holes in a functional dependable manner?

How do you get your hand into the inside of the glass boxes to clean their soon to be fouled  inside faces?

You are also going add more acrylic boxes to hold the lamps?

the acrylic box will be removeable and there will be holes at the bottom with tank connections for the outlets
the lamps will be in the fiberglass box to clean the box all i do is lift it out both of them

kcress

Hard to say as there are so many variables.
Flow
Intensity
nutrient levels
tank lighting
tank competition for nutrients
available algae species existing in the tank

Everywhere from about 2 or 3 days to a week to see something.

SantaMonica
10-22-2009, 02:32 PM
Screen roughness is proving to be most important in getting fast growth now, and thick growth later. Followed by strong flow and light.

ShanGo
10-24-2009, 08:57 AM
clean it to day 7 days now this is what it looks like

Are you removing the screen from the pipe for cleaning? You need to, so that the slot stays open.

ShanGo
11-07-2009, 12:11 PM

ShanGo

Looks like a well made scrubber.

SantaMonica
11-07-2009, 07:57 PM
Clean the whole thing this time, and use a toothbrush to clean the slot. Also use the toothbrush to get really clean the part of the screen that goes into the slot; this will make it grow back slower there.

Screen growth looks great for 4 days. That's why you want a rough screen... it holds on to algae better, and so it grows faster without letting gow. I'll use that pic as an example of how good a rough screen can grow.

The things you see are Tunicates (or "sea squirts"). They need lots of food particles and flow, and that's what your tank is providing. You should also be able to grow sponges.

The typical blue ones are a good start. Put them in the highest flow. And they can't touch the air, not even once.

Red ones can be more trouble.

Need to ask
i have 2 screens
How do i clean them
1) clean one say today and the next one tomorrow
2)clean one today and the next one next week
the 7days rule
1) means they get clean every 7 days
2) means one screen 7days and the next one 14 days
can some one let me know which one to do ? :?

SantaMonica
01-01-2010, 02:05 PM
Try cleaning one every 5 days. But if they are brown, do 4 or 3 days, until green.

ShanGo
01-02-2010, 05:31 AM

Verry impressive mate..well done - excelent output

i have made my scrubber and its very similar to yours.

Difference is that my box is plasic - painted black on the outside
and the ligths are attached on the side - 8 of them

ill post some pics on a new threat later today... and i hope will work as good as yours cos i have a real problem since i removed my nitrate reactor and phos media

my dilimma as follows:

cant decide what material to use for the screen

1. a very rought - up plastic one as yours
OR
2. the plastic mesh thing used in this scrubber - see link below...

Can you please advice where to get the wireing and electric work for that through a webshop? Where I live (top of the globe) you don't get to buy stuff like that for less than a fortune :p

Alternativly, if you please could post the specific names of the parts.

Thanks in advance

have a problem these brown things keep coming on screen and then it goes in main tank
does any one knows y and it has a high smell to it
when you start cleaning in as if its will knock you out i have to get fresh air so strong just start doing it
the main tank has brown hair alage in it when i clean the screen it goes in 4-5 days the scrren has this brown coat on it as in picture

SantaMonica

Try adding some iron, like Kent's Iron + Manganese. Should make the yellow turn green.

You don't want to increase flow if the screen is already letting go of things.

ShanGo
06-08-2010, 11:47 AM
i see these growing on my rocks do you know y please

SantaMonica

Can't tell what they are. But they are sure to go away with the rest of the nuisance algae.

Are you getting the results you want?

As already said im trying to figure the best possible design for my system. Im between the lights you are using and HOT5 but the problem with them is that i cannot find any stronger than 24watts 60cm.

Any suggestions / advice?
