It's the light that matters. Could be anything inside it. How many watts is it pulling...

it was on 18 to start with and no joy
so moved to 16 and then 14 and now on 10
so you think I should go up the hrs instead of down please
there is nice green growth in the 4 holes but no were else
thanks again
I did take some turf out the dt and put in the scrubber
while on 18 it seem to bleach so thought the hrs was too much?

Yes you always up the hours until growth turns yellow or you get bald spots.

It looks to me like it is getting no light at all. Since it is not a SURF2, and I did not build the light, I have no idea what is really inside it.
Try using a 23 watt CFL 2700k floodlight instead.

Then it's just has low power leds, not 3w leds. What does the power supply say?

hi sm
when I said it didn't I meant hot
it does get warm but not hot
The power supply is 700mA
3-21vdc with the leds taking 2.5V each (I have measured this with meter)
Power = amps x volts - 700 x 2.5 = 1.75W
1.75 x 4(led) = 7W total
Power supply is good for 9W max4698

Buy some enteromorpha sp. and throw it in if you can find it many screens end up growing this algae anyways.
Ulva sp. may even change shape to bind to the grabber material

Well that should be more than enough, if your DIY light has any power at all. Run it 24 hours, for 10 days.
Also of question is the texture and strings that the DIY person used to build it. Since I have no idea what he used, there is no telling if they will allow attachment. My guess is they probably will after time.
