View Full Version : upflow algae scrubber submersible lights?
I'm building an upflow algae scrubber in an old HOB refugium that I'll be painting black as to contain the algae scrubber lighting so it doesn't leak into the main tank. Most of the builds I've seen contain the lighting on the outside of the box, but I was wondering if there were any lights that I could use (LEDS or other lights) by submerging underwater as I want all the light to be contained inside the HOB box.
If this is impossible, can anyone recommend some standard/best cheap lighting for one of these upflow scrubbers that I can shine into a 10"x5"x5" box?
Thanks~

thanks for the info. . I check out that thread and the last post Bilk made he mentioned for his final build he was using these - http://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinfo/led-module-strings/lsmcc-series-constant-current-smd-led-sign-module/980/2396/
seems like he was getting some great growth
I'd be willing to try them out, but I wanted to know in terms of a power supply, is there a way to plug these all into one adapter without having to splice them together? like a multi-connector strip to plug them all into?
Thanks

Probably not. They are meant to be wired.
so what options do I have in terms of LED lights for an upflow scrubber, as far as the ones that go on the outside of the tank/box? (sorry, not finding much on this in the upflow scrubber thread)

If you have room you could just use a CFL flood light shining through the side of the glass.
These have been shown to work as well. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111156677896?var=410208250366&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
these are not 100% waterproof.

Any LED light will work, if it will work on a waterfall.
Oh ok! cool thanks guys, I appreciate it. If you were to use the mentioned LED that was linked from ebay, which wattage is best?
btw.. I should also say that the scrubber is going to be in a plastic HOB refugium box that I'm modding slightly. If the LED is directly against the plastic, couldn't it possibly heat up and melt it? The water should have an overall cooling effect, but I don't know how hot those LED with heatsinks get.

The 20 Watt red/blue combination has been used successfully with a waterfall scrubber.
