ok so for this project I am in the process of making an all in one 40 breeder.
the tanks only filtration will be biological. live rock sand and of course ATS.
thinking about doing the UAS style ATS in one chamber then maybe a space for carbon if needed to clean the green from the h2o ...
i'll be using the ATS from the get go..it seams like alot if not most start there ATS after the tank has been up and running for awhile. so any info on starting the tank using ATS would be great.
next question is.. not sure if i need the 1 cube or 1/2 per say screen as I am not feeding. my bioload will be med to med heavy but lot over kill. mostly softies LPS and NPS with a few easy SPS so I dont need amazing water quality.it will be good that i will have "stuff" in the H2O looks like the screen size in the same on the HOG.5 and the HoG 1 just the extra LED is that right?
I like the look of the green grabber style "screen" what are ppl feedback with it? does it come off while cleaning it real good?
was thinking of DIY the same concept with some carabsea aggregate and some reef safe glue. good idea or bad? any other options. I dont want it to fall off when cleaning...
how many of you ATS ppl are running carbon, how often and in what way?
what driver to get to run the leds? already have red crees
so lets build an amazing ats AIO tank.
any feedback or thoughts form you guys would be great!!
cheers

Water will not be green.
Starting with a scrubber will be low-growth, and will fill in later.
Your load is either a lot or a little. It can't be both. If you are not feeding much, the load is small.
The HOG1 has a bigger screen than the HOG.5
You probably don't want aragonite because it is not that strong, and it might slowly dissolve. Calcite or quartz is better. But you can try it. Use epoxy and nylon strings.
If you only run 2 leds, you can use the replacement driver in the HOG.5 parts.

thanks SM I was hoping you would chime in here...
good call on the quartz. dam its snowing here now could have just gone and found some crushed it up. maybe i'll will still try.
any chance i could get a close up photo of how you siliconed the air tub to the HOG w the green grabber?
humm dont see the led driver on your website
so excited to try ATS tank been thinking about for a while now!

so any one have suggestion for magnets to hold the HOG style UAS in place?
think 4 rare earth magnets would do the trick? or would that be to strong and cause problems wothother stuff in the ALL IN ONE chambers?

Neodymium magnets are fine, just get ones big enough and remember they cannot be exposed to water
Cree only makes 630nm Reds. These are not the ones you want, you need 660nm Deep Red.

Some of these pics show it:

Parts are here:

Also we have the new rectangular black epoxy coated neodymium magnets used on the 1 and 1x, which are 5mm by 6mm by 50mm, for $5 each. They are not on the site but can be added to an order.

ah thanks guys!
what is best to coat the magnets with epoxy or silicone or is there something better?
also what strength og magnets of hold through a 40br glass think it 1/4" but not sure?

Epoxy first, then silicone.
Strength is not the issue; size is. We use N45 20mm X 5mm X 6mm on the HOG.5... one at the top, and one at the bottom.

^ thanks SM i am getting closer to starting the built! :)
got the tank and will be building the AIO baffle tomorrow of the next...one question you guys might and insightful feedback what would your turn over rate through the ATS then fuge chamber be? thinking 3 to 5 times ( 10X max ) then let the PH do the work in the DT for water movement...
feedback?

Turnover is not really important at all. Any amount will do.

I completely disagree with the turnover issue. I have multiple clients that will back this up. Increasing flow on a waterfall unit allows you to increase the intensity and/or photoperiod and achieve much better growth and filtration.
I have one local guy that I modded his Rev 2 L2 with Rev 3 drains for high flow and his results were almost immediate on high highly fed 90g tank.

wow sorry for all the typos in the above post....
humm so turn over rate does not matter then...that is interesting. guess I will go with 3 to 5 X turn over rate then.
i was thinking of having the over flow fall in to the ATS chamber. my thought was, it might add to the O2 and help the turf grow...prob. will not have an affect one way or the other.
thoughts?

Scrubber do not use oxygen. The only way overflowing in the the scrubber compartment would help is if you could add bubbles to the scrubber, which the air/water interface would help remove the boundary layer on the algae and would increase metabolite transfer.

so I officially started my build yesterday....
was trying to find a source for black glass but at last could not find pure black, so I went with a dark gray then found some very nice stand glass to go over it. ( a 200 miles round trip drive to get it) got it all cut silicone together yesterday. let it cure for 24hrs.
then today build my very simple AIO...ok ok it's not really more like a ATS heater box...decided not to put any bubble traps in might pay for that later.... so it just a nice box in the back right of the tank. it 15" long and 5" wide so if I decide to ad a skimmer or other small filtration "goodies" I can . but don't think i'll need to. the 5" part is 1/2 lower to allow water in to the chamber and i'll be using a rio 1700 return pump @ 1' head should be 620 GPH its adjustable so if I find that to much I can turn it down some.
started my ATS too :)
got some new 660 deep red LED and a lil driver form rapid LED. I really like this drive so far it will power 1-5 led so If I decide I need more than 2 no prob. :)

so with the magnets you guys think the N48 1"X 1/4" would do the trick?
http://www.amazon.com/BYKES-Neodymium-Magnets-Strong-Refrigerator/dp/B00B1M37MY/ref=sr_1_31?ie=UTF8&qid=1384291624&sr=8-31&keywords=magnets
so maybe I should get more smaller ones like these:
http://www.amazon.com/Neodymium-Magnets-inch-Disc-N48/dp/B001KUWM3C/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384382362&sr=8-1&keywords=magnets
now do I just use epoxy to attack then , then cover them in silicone? or do I epoxy the whole magnet then silicone?

Use the bars.
Since they are not epoxy coated, go ahead and coat them on all sides first with 30 minute. Then silicone.

yeah I was thinking the bars would be nice just hope they hold it...
almost done with my ATS build just need to glue the air line tubing in and connect the driver.
will ad some photos once I learn how to get them off my phone...doh
oh I was thinking of crushing some dried coral chunks and adding that to the screen to make it even more course. don't have enough to coat the whole inside like the green grabber and never found a source for quartz or calcite. think that is a good idea or not?

Might as well try it.
