Hi!
Has anyone ever thought of or actually build a hang-on-the-back UAS before? I sort of envision the SM algae scrubber, but attached to the outside of the tank, maybe immersed in some large refugium (such as a Finnex) or a custom-built box that it would fit into, and have water flow through it the same way it would a HOB filter but the airstone would propel the water up the scrubber's screen before it leaves the HOB.
Any input & ideas, comments & suggestions welcome.

A few folks have put them into converted hob filters. Also there is one in a diagram here:

That looks awesome. I wonder why they haven't tried to commercialize it?

In one of my old posts I have a HOB I built/converted.
Is that the one where you attached a trough to the outlet of a HOB filter? That's a great idea!

There was a couple of them, one had the air stone in the bottom of the HOB, it was almost clear so the light still got through. The trough worked much better!!! Matter of fact its still in use on my pod production tank.

Hmmm... I tried to find the thread about the other HOB in your posts, but couldn't. Do you remember what the thread was called?

WOW, it was way back there!!! http://algaescrubber.net/forums/showthread.php?1865-Kerry-s-UAS-test . This was my best UAS HOB test pilot I ever built. It has pics.

Hey! Yeah, the link worked. I just saw it now.
I love the venturi pumps-- I didn't think of those as an option! I keep wanting to put an airstone inside the filter box, but if I had one of those pumps that intakes air as well it might solve that problem somewhat.
Awesome! Thanks so much for locating the post.

You are very welcome. Out of all the UAS I have built this type worked the best for me. I think the light on both sides made the difference. I still use and prefer the waterfall but If I had to do an UAS type it would be this type.

Too bad the Millenium 3000 filter has been discontinued. :( There are some that are similar but seem to lack the venturi option.

You can likely add this option, you only need to supply an air source such as hose or tube.

Well, I'll keep trying with my Finnez build and see how that goes. At the moment I should be able to integrate the algae scrubber and the biological filtration into the refugium, which is something I've been wanting to do for a long time. I don't like having all kinds of equipment around a tank and don't have a sump, so a plug-n-play HOB design is sort of my dream come true. :)
