I am thinking of making a algae scrubber for mine 100L/25gallon thank marine.
have a lot of algea in main display ( don't what to do)
i am running phosphate and sillicat absorber.
maybe i have to much lighting.

my system is the following

inlet eheim -->
eheim canister 2213 -->
50 by 10 by 5 chaeto growth tank-->
interal sump -->
rsm 130 protein skimmer
out let tank
lighting is
7 led running on 7,1 watt ( 10 led 20000k)
2 blue led 10 watt
soon get a 3d model i will post it

let get back to the algea scrubber

My idea is to put the algae scrubber out of the water in to a separate box.
Screen size is going to be 100mm x 200mm
Light 2 deep red led. 3W
I am going to place a 60L/15 gallon air pump
And a pump whit 75gallon for getting water out of tank and overflow to get in back in there.

My question is is this flow enough ?
do I need that air pump?
it is not going to stimulate flow from tank.
Just for flow inside scrubber. And maybe CO2

if i can get algae out of the tank this Saturday i will be extremely happy ( got a lot of family that is goin to see tank for first time it running form october but still)

I almost forgot to mention
i do have fish and coral already
2 nemo
2 Chinese dart-fish
1 sea star
and some corals and 1 anemone

by the way srry for crappy English i am not English

to explain the picture

green cillender is eheim canister
then chaeto tank is has 1 20000k 7w led
next champer is heater (red)
and rsm 130 protein skimmer

Welcome from Netherlands.

Is the design for the scrubber the box on top?

Arno
03-26-2014, 01:51 PM
this scrub filter is going to be between the cheato tank and the out flow to sump

here is my setup with filter

SantaMonica

The scrubber will be horizontal like a river?

Arno
03-27-2014, 12:21 AM
No it is the black box
At first I want to keep my chaeto and see wat happens
So it wil be vertical.
But I indeed also have the opertunity to make it horizontal but don't know if that is wise

SantaMonica
03-27-2014, 11:11 AM
Can you do a close-up of the black box, and inside it?

Arno
03-27-2014, 11:22 AM
It is going to be pretty simple

Red led
Glass
Screen
And May be air stone in the bottom

Oh and a tube that transfer the water to the bottom

SantaMonica
03-27-2014, 12:26 PM
Do you want waterfall or upflow?

Arno
03-27-2014, 12:52 PM
haha understand the mis under standing is going to be a fully subemerged so
underwater and the flow is to the top so upflow. but a different one whitout having to put it in the tank
to give you a idea
440Lh pump transerfer water to bottem of filter-->
water passes the screen and the whith overflow back in to the tank.

it is also to do a waterfall but then i need to remove skimmer wasn't planning to do that.

SantaMonica

Ok it it is going to be 100mm X 200mm upflow screen, so I would use 4 led, each one 3 watts.

Arno
03-28-2014, 12:20 AM
That's right
but the only problem I have is I that don't know If i have enough flow.
That's going to be a 440lh pump. I don't know if that's enough.
I can put in a air stone in there but is it only cause internal flow and extra co2.
When I mean with the Internal flow is the following.

The air stone isn't going to create a airlift but don't now if this is so necessary.
I have ordered 10 deep red LEDs three watt.
Don't use all but I will have enough backup.

I hear people roughing up their screen but I can also print it in 3-D what will be better?
And does it necessarily need to be white ?

SantaMonica
03-28-2014, 09:31 AM
Water flow from the aquarium to the scrubber is not that important. Slow is ok.

There must be air bubbles going up the screen, or it will not grow.

Yes you must rough up the screen like a cactus. 3D print is not rough enough unless it has holes and you scratch it up like a cactus.

White is best to reflect light back to the algae.

Thank you santa Monica going to finish my design and print.
Let's hope I get my led en led driver fast so I can start building this filter :)

This is what I wan to get rid of :)
Sand looks clean that only because i cleaned 1 hour ago.
Oh i am not sure is it algae problem
Because when I take the brown stuff out of the tank.
It completely fall apart and the water seem red I wil post som pictures later

Arno
03-28-2014, 09:54 AM
It seem like the fall apart and later on connect back to gether52465247524852495250

SantaMonica

Yes it is simply extra nutrients. When the scrubber removes the nutrients, the algae on the rocks will go away.

Arno
04-01-2014, 02:42 AM
Oké waiting voor led to arivve

Arno
04-09-2014, 08:06 AM
i am looking for the right screen.
but can't find the normal screen everyone uses kan is use kevlar ropes being torn apart. it will have a lot of surface area and kevlar it self has a pretty rough surface

but the good new is that my leds have arivved
i tested it whit the 10W driver and this part already works

SantaMonica
04-09-2014, 11:04 AM
Yes kevlar strings will work. Or nylon strings (better because they are white).

Arno
04-15-2014, 02:54 AM
I finally found a shop that sells the screen I roughed it up

I found some place between my skimmed and sumps wall around 1 cm.
I placed the screen 20cm bye 30 cm whith a air pump is this gap.
Placed some 4x3 watt 660nm deep red led.
Know I am going to what until their grow some algae
I wonder is this 1 cm I enough for a up flow scrubber.

Oh I know the led are not big enough for the screen
But for this 25 gallon tank the led are enough.

SantaMonica
04-15-2014, 07:52 AM
1 cm is good for air bubbles. If you can get the light to the screen, it will work.

20 x 30 cm is too big. Probably only need 10 x 20 cm.

As you can see the light is good spread I know screen is to big but it doesn't matter
I simply have a space of 30 bye 40 where is can place the screen
Is assume that it doesn't matter that I have a big screen but not enough lighting.

Arno

Stil not working but I did a three day black out so wasn't expecting it to work

I do have a dinoflagellate outbreak
I placed a screen in the main display
And THE dino inedialty attaches to iT so

Here we some pics 532853295329

You need more light.

Stuur anders even pb
Ik had 10 leds op een 20 X 10 cm scherm op vol vermogen.

Arno

Reason why it went brown under 12 hour is probably that is catches all the floating dinoflagellate
Any one has some tip to battle dinoflagellate

SantaMonica
04-25-2014, 10:13 AM
It is brown because that is how growth starts.

Arno
04-25-2014, 03:08 PM
Oh But i literary see the Dino flaglettes floating around an hook up to the screen.

Oeps weird bit thuis is nu groetjes over 10 dat whith out cleaning i placed some Chaeto to grow between screen and glad
ALSo Mose of bible used to go behind the screen know between screen and glass
I also start dosing CA2+ water. Oh I still have dinoflagettes

SantaMonica
05-04-2014, 06:27 PM
Did you make the screen very rough?

Arno
05-05-2014, 12:58 AM
Yes i think so whith a saw just very rough

SantaMonica
05-05-2014, 08:10 PM
Can you put a sheet of white plastic behind it?

Arno
05-08-2014, 04:01 AM
For the photo or while in tank

SantaMonica
05-08-2014, 05:46 PM
While in tank, to block the light.

Arno
05-09-2014, 02:15 AM
Oh oke i wil to that i also see a bit mor growth fight know maybe be case dinoflagelattes is getting a bit less.
P.s. I am planning to use H2O2 soon my questionnaire is what is werker the dino or the GHA

SantaMonica
05-09-2014, 05:15 PM
No need for H2O2 if your scrubber is working properly.

Arno
05-10-2014, 12:40 AM
Oh oke but it isn't right know
Is see more growth know bubbles go in front of the screen.
I still have to place the white plastic. I will sent pic how tank is looking horrible you know

Arno
05-11-2014, 03:17 AM
Problem i think

- 30 gallon air pump 120lh
- led 1,5 inches form glass
- led shine in tank so less led scrubber
- light are now on from 8am to 11pm
- I feed 1/3 of a cube at night 3 hour before UAS turns of
I changes some stuff
- to much light main display 6 10 watt led on 80 procent power
And 2 Royal blue led
- dinoflagellate

How I hope to solve problems
-Led know 4 mm from glass
- white plastic behind scrubber so know light in tank and more light scrubber
- light cycle know 8am to 4 am

Photo tank

Coral don't seem to have a lots of problems white the Dino
In fact. My calistrea is splitting and my hammer coral is ALSo getting new polyps

Water values tested in store were
0,0NO3
0,0PO4
I am adding calcium wearer know

2,5 weeks of growth whith out cleaning.
Oh the Chaeto does grow pretty wel.
I placed some between screen and glass

SantaMonica
05-11-2014, 09:02 AM
Can you do video of bubbles on scrubber?

Arno
05-12-2014, 04:51 AM
Done my best hope that is is enough
But I check air pump it actually says 240lh maybe my cut ling doesn't have enough cuts

http://youtu.be/8RCXbatvHqc

SantaMonica
05-12-2014, 12:17 PM
Ok I saw the bubbles... seem to be enough.

If you have 4 LEDs, then they are probably spread too far apart. Can you move the LEDs closer together?

Arno
05-12-2014, 01:33 PM
Yes but I changed much lately
The 4 led are 9 inches apart from ech other in Total
So 1.5 inch each measured from center led
Know it is 0,5 cm from glass.

But I think it is going to grow know because much closer to glass.
Also problem could be not enough water refresh ment
Be cause it is in such a tight space.
And maybe not enough waste supplied.
And other problem is that the Dino probably eat the nutrient pretty fast.
And faster then GHA

SantaMonica
05-12-2014, 05:08 PM
Let it grow 7 days.

Arno
05-12-2014, 11:58 PM
Was planning to do that And zee what happens

Arno
05-13-2014, 02:39 AM
I see GHA on the glass know.

Arno
05-13-2014, 02:40 AM
I decided to get a sump so this should work a lot smoother then.

Setup is gong to be overflow box.
Sump
Cannister as return pump

SantaMonica
05-13-2014, 09:25 AM
That is ok. Clean it later.
