Wrong algae type growing?

What does it mean if I'm growing the nuisance algae on my scrubber instead of the thicker "ramen noodle" algae? It only grows up to a certain length and thickness, too.

There really is no wrong type; all algae absorb nutrients, some better or faster than others. But the idea is to grow as much of it, as fast as possible.
