Have just finished building an upflow scrubber from parts ordered from SM.

Used airline with holes/slits cut in it to deliver the air but it was to noisy (tank next to desk in office) so have tried it with an air stone fitted. I know the norm is large bubbles but have seen airstones used. There are now bubbles being trapped on the mesh and it's silent :)

From the 2 video clips which flow is better 1 or 2 and will an air stone still give good results?
1.

or is this ok

Welcome from UK.

Airstones will work, but will clog over time. But it should still grow in the mean time.

Aquatic Eco-Systems recommends cleaning their Sweetwater ceramic airstone/diffusers with muriatic acid.
