Although black slime absorbs the most nutrients from the water
(see http://algaescrubber.net/forums/showthread.php?3740-Slime-is-the-best-filter)
it can cover up weak LED lights easily. But the strong 660nm deep red LED lights in
DROP scrubbers® cut through the slime to enable growth on the other side of the box.

Most algae scrubbers have lots of light escaping, even with light blockers. But look how dark our DROP scrubber is; only one dot of red light out the top.

This is where a DROP scrubber® is really useful... back compartments of nano's. This photo is looking down on it:

Can you spot the algae-eating (filter-eating) culprits in this DROP1.2x scrubber? To prevent these, just pour some fresh water in during each cleaning/harvesting.

Deep red light, also known as ruby red or 660nm red, mixed with upflowing bubbles that rub rocky Green Grabber® textures, is what grows the algae in this DROP1.2x scrubber®

These are 3 of the DROP1.2x scrubbers in a freshwater sump:

This DROP1.2x is cooking pumpkin pie. Actually, it's a new installation with very low nutrients in the water, which needs the black shade screen to reduce the red light.

This DROP1.2x has bright green slime and needs brushing every few days. This growth gets thicker on Green Grabber rocks under water, but not on strings, and not on waterfalls.

This black plastic shade screen from a DROP (tm) scrubber even has growth on it. Once removed, all the growth will be on the white Green Grabber® rocky surfaces.

This DROP1.2x (tm) scrubber could be from fresh or saltwater. The nutrients in the water are very high, causing a dark/black slime growth that is holding on to the white Green Grabber® rocky textures. Most of this slime would have already fallen off of a waterfall scrubber screen because it is above the water.

The DROP scrubbers of size 1.2 and larger have very strong lighting because of the number of LEDs and large amount of white reflective Green Grabber® surfaces, so they should be started with the included black plastic shade screen in the position shown until the growth surfaces get some color of growth on them.

Let the lights be with you... in the back compartment. The DROP1.2x fits most compartments; you just pull it up and out to clean/harvest. This one is brand new.

Guess what grows the most algae?

Why the black shade screen inside the DROP models? Because the red LED lights are very strong, and they reflect off of the Green Grabber® white rocky surfaces, and this is too much light for new algae growth. So the shade reduces the light until the surfaces are coated with some color of growth, and this reduces the light intensity. That's when the power of the lights are needed to shine through the thick growth.

This DROP1.2x needs the slime brushed out in the sink more often.
