I'm currently building my new tank, and want to try as much as possible on this. I will be running a scrubber able to do the filtration by itself, however, while a refugium is not needed, there are indeed microorganisms that are cool to observe if one add some liverock(rubble) and a dsb.

Does this conflict with a scrubber or will it also be beneficial as a combination? Granted I may have to increase feeding, but I recon the scrubber won't die in any case.

I had an RDSB. Disconnected now.
No problem, but no longer needed, and took up extra space.
A properly set up RDSB is rather boring. You do not want much visible life. Mostly just worms and such. Best kept fairly dark.
BTW: If not set up correctly, they can crash, and cause real problems.

A refugium on the other hand, can be very interesting. Lots of small critters.
Plus, if you put it after your ATS, is a major pod factory.

My personal opinion. I'd go with your plan but I'd skip the DSB. The rock and such is useful to breed critters such as amphipods and other things but the DSB I don't see much use for.
