Triple Layer

I built a vertical scrubber and put in three layers of roughed up mesh.
(Figuring it is easier to remove it later than to add it)

It has a 90 watt (equivalent) cf Spot light about 4" from the mesh on each side.

I rubbed some algae from my Frag tank (part of the same water system) on it to help
seed it. It has only been running two days but I am already seeing some growth on it.

The question is should I keep it at three layers or reduce it to 2 or even 1 layer?

One layer.

Multiple layers require stronger lighting, green growth, and more frequent cleaning, otherwise it will block too much light. It's not worth the extra effort. Besides, most of the filtering is done by the algae outside of the screen.
