Will a 50 watt halogen bulb be enough for a 29 gallon tank?

Don't want to us halogens... way too hot, not enough light, and not the right color.

Even more reason to use fluorescent... less heat.

do you think it would be easier to do a sump version that runs under the tank or try to fit the one in the second chamber? im worried the second chamber will be too small to fit an adequate size pice of screen in it.

By far, it's easier to go under the tank. It just takes space.

Or, you could try to convert your whole tank to this:

I hang a couple of pieces of screen(plastic canvas) on the inside of my overflow. No light on it but from the display. It does grow algae towards the top and quites the fall of the water into it. The light lighting the whole back as SM shows would be a good idea for an AIO. SM? Would'nt that be equivelent to a horizontal thus needing to be twice as big still due to light only on one side?
It would have to be 6x10 to give 60sq. inches right?

Yes it is one sided.

in a 29 gal tank does the screen have to be 3x10 or can i make it bigger?

If it is vertical, you can make it bigger than 3 inches, because any bulb is going to cover more than 3 inches. Make it 6 X 6.
