HOG1.3
This customer's HOG1.3 scrubber® in freshwater shows how the Green Grabber® rocky surfaces on the back panel hold on to loose slimey growth. This is a good example of how freshwater growth is different, and needs different attachment surfaces. Although this type of thin non-hair growth can occur in saltwater, it's much more common in freshwater and does not hold on well to screens, or strings, and this is why the HOG1.3 (and HOG.5 and 1 and 1x and 2 and 2x) do not have screens or strings.
The HOG1.3 can also be used in saltwater, however.

Update: Since the Fusion 700 air pump is no longer available, the Danner AP-4 is now recommended for most scrubbers, except the SURF4 or 4x which can use a Danner AP-8, and the SURF8 which needs a large single-outlet pump.
Note that all HOG and DROP models have 1 air inlet, therefore the 2 outlets of the Danner AP-4 pump can be combined into 1 with a "T" or "Y" fitting, and this will give you a lot of air which can still be reduced with the control knob. If you don't want to combine the outlets, then the smaller Danner AP-3 pump has only 1 outlet, but it also does not have a control knob.

Feed your fish from your scrubber.
Free, fresh, and does not add nitrate or phosphate to the water like normal feeding does.

Another example of high nutrients in the water, leading to black growth in the scrubber. This HOG1.3 scrubber® only has two LED lights, but still pulls nutrients:

For sumps with little room, a larger HOG scrubber® like the HOG1.3 or larger here, fits well. It was just installed and still has the shade cloth over half the light.

A super packed HOG scrubber. Can't tell which one though. This growth looks mostly like Cladophora sp.

This is a HOG1.3, which is a larger case but with less Green Grabber surfaces, and with 2 red LEDs. This one needs brushing every 2 or 3 days, and the light on 24 hours. It should never get this overgrown.
