LEDs are certainly an interesting idea, as they are potentially being used to replace MH lights, e.g.:

I'd suggest going for mainly white LEDs with a few blue to try and get the right colour temp.
It'd be nice to find out some more specs. on the LEDs though, e.g. Lumens of light output, colour temperature etc.
I did some basic calculations in the past, and a few years ago you would get about 2 times the amount of light per Watt by using good compact fluorescent bulbs compared to LEDs, however, there are more effecient LEDs now, so it would be interesting to see. I really like the look of those DIY LED kits, being able to mix and match the LED colours is great.

I would say try this link, these guys sell great led grow lights and they work wonderful and don't increase any water temprature unlike other lights do.
Cheap on eBay

Re: LED powered scrubbers
I'm getting ready to test the 14W version of those.
Re: LED powered scrubbers
SM have you ordered and built that kit yet?
Re: LED powered scrubbers
It's not a kit... it's ready to plug in the wall. It's what I used to build the light screen.

Led Growth progress
I decided to clean half today. Trates were about 10, this is the lowest trates I have ever had on a tank. I have updated the led to a spot type bulb which is more concentrated but less LED's in all. Seems to be working much better than the panel.
With half cleaned I should be able to see how the new bulb growth pattern.
Bulb is about a foot away now but shining at a 90º to screen.
Re: LED powered scrubbers
looks good, Which led panel are you using.
Re: LED powered scrubbers
Yes that's much better. You are now getting the tricky black algae, that you have to keep clean every few days for a few weeks.
