Another milestone, 4,000 posts (ok, so technically I made the 4000th one by posting this, but they're mostly SantaMonica of course - keep up the good work :D).
Thanks again to everyone for making...
Good to know others have had success with this method, I've been looking at getting one of these tools for a little while now.
Great idea, I've seen those advertised, looks like it's done a great job, did it tear anywhere? I presume you had to hold it pretty lightly.
Tom.
After prolonged use of copper in a tank (12 weeks!) it does appear to affect the algae, it seems to take 3-4 weeks to have a noticeable affect then the good green algae seem to die off.
For shorter...
So it does :D
Yeah, coincides with the new nginx server. Hopefully this has sorted it.
Tom
For some reason it doesn't seem to affect me so I was wondering if those who are having the problems are on an ISP that changes the IP it requests the pages from every time it requests a page (it's...
Hey guys,
Looking into this at the moment, there's nothing obvious so far, I moved the site on to a nginx instead of Apache, but I've not had any similar issues with other PHP sites.
Tom.
Sorry, yes, that's the same thing.
Yes, that will work well as long as you can get a compact fluorescent bulb to fit it.
Next size up in Watts, the colour temperature in Kelvin is fine
Should be spot on for normal loading
You need roughly 1 Watt of compact fluro bulbs (not equivilant) per US Gal shared between the two sides, so you need 60w either side of CFL bulbs, plus some sort of reflector.
Hi and welcome to the algae world :D.
If you have liverock it could easily be some small dieoff that has leached phosphates/nitrates into the water that the algae has quickly absorbed so the...
Don't forget we measure lighting Watts in Compact Fluorescent Watts for algae scrubbers, not equivalent Watts. E.g. I have around 150W of actual Watts of CFL bulbs on one side of screen for mine.
Hey guys, we're now running on a shiny new server I just bought/setup should be nice and fast!
Let me know if there are any problems.
Thanks to a little magic (apache mod_proxy) everyone is seeing...
As far as I've heard, there shouldn't be any disadvantages to running ozone with an ATS, as long as it's not too high it should only help. Complete guess here, but if set too high it may start...
Thanks too, don't forget everything Santamonica's done too, he's put more time than anyone into helping us! 8-)
Heh, well thanks for your kind words, luckily for the Brits (like me) it's been during the early mornings, so the US guys may have noticed, unfortunately for me, I'm the sysadmin for the servers at...
Hi guys, I'd like to apologise for the downtime on the site over the last week, this is due to network and server issues (including two large DDOS attacks and hardware failures) at our ISP...
I'm not currently using it at the moment, but I had it running for several months with no adverse affects, but would still be cautious about using it, I tend to use Polyfilters in my tank now so...
Aye, Nikon D700
Sounds like a good idea, my screen was never rough enough, so a few weeks ago instead of cleaning half of the screen I used a whole saw to rough up the areas I was cleaning, which also had the affect...
What sort of material are the screens made from?
Have you roughed it up?
The idea is that the air is pulled down to stop the Durso from siphoning, so the air will go all the way down. If regulated properly it will be very quiet.
I personally use a 1 weir - 2 Durso setup.
It's not ideal, but after a little tweaking it seems reliable, and pretty quiet. But another option may be better, or maybe a larger single Durso instead.
800 gal/hour with 22" wide will give you a nice 36gal/hour/inch, however you must make sure this is the actual flow produced, expect to loose easily 1/3 (if not half) of the flow from the rating of...
There's only sand and fish in the tank, plus a few liverocks (most are in the Q tank). The tank is fairly bare at the moment
There's no carbon, and the sand has been in a marine tank for 2-3 years....
There does seem to be a lot of cyano on it, try and rinse it off under a shower every few days, without taking any green algae off if you can.
The copper based anti-parasitic treatments like Seachem Cupramine (the best IMO) appear to be safe to use with algae scrubbers. The copper seems to suppress/kill slime algae on the screen, but allows...
Ok, I can again say that the copper does seem to get rid of the slime algaes very well, the scrubber screen is looking fantastic, with good growth, and almost entirely nice thick carpet-like dark...
Just to verify, the pump is still running 24x7 right? Only the lights should go on/off.
Hi there, got a bunch of questions for you:
What bulb/lights are you using? (type, power, colour temperature).
What flow of water are you getting over the screen?
Have you manually removed as...
Not sure if you meant "a few days with the lights off", but make sure they're not off all the time! They should be off for 6 hours a day and on for 18.
As I mentioned in the other thread, I've moved all inverts out into a Q tank (after dipping the coral in iodine dips, and rinsing the rest), and treating the main tank with Seachem Cupramine (copper...
Well, after a week of running seachem cupramine (copper based medication), the algae scrubber is actually looking better than ever!
It's weird, it's as if it's killed off the slime algaes and left...
Welcome, and no problems :D
Yeah, I guess my calculations for a single sided are probably off, my scrubber isn't exactly horizontal, it's at a 30 degree slope. However, I do myself have nearly double that flow, and I've been...
And another celebration!
Our 100th (real!) member "madscientist", and rapidly aproaching 2000 posts, easily making the site the number 1 resource for all things algae scrubber :D.
Again, thanks...
You've got very confused it seems lol!
Horizontal scrubbers are NOT more effective, if you're lucky they can be as effective.
You need to DOUBLE the area on a horizontal scrubber to get the same...
Yes, and the lights that would have been across two sides would be all on one side. You can however have half the standard flow (17-18gal/hour per inch of width instead of 35) as it's normally split...
Apperently:
I'll be using Prime to tackle any temporary ammonia/nitrite spikes if it does in fact damage the filter bed, and will put some decent bacterial starters in after the carbon has...
Hey guys, slightly off-topic, had a mini disaster with the tank due to numerous factors (tank overheating, not cleaning the screen often enough, removing the foam pad filters from the power heads for...
I'll say again...
ignore the equivalent watts, they have nothing to do with what we're talking about.
A 23W compact fluorescent bulb is a 23W bulb, that's all there is to it.
When this happens on my screen I take it out straight away and use a shower to hose it off (try and do it into a bucket and throw it on your plants - good fertilizer, but it can block up your sink if...
The wider the screen the more flow of water you need.
A 75 US gal tank needs roughly 75 square inches of screen. At 2ft / 24in that's only 3" high (24*3 = 72).
Each inch of width requires 35 us...
Yup, consider anyone here talking about Watts of light as compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL)
This is also the real power that the bulb uses rather than what an incandescent bulb would use to get the...

No, still clean it every 7 days, however, read the scrubber basics post, I point you specifically to this part:
Well, it's getting better very quickly, so it's looking good.
I've not taken any since it started going a bit pear shaped, but there's the post with the slightly older ones on:...
