I believe any of the plastic products we utilize have residue from the manufacturing process - that includes oils and other chemicals. Most every protein skimmer directions say to rinse with vinegar...
Like everything else I've ever put on line in the system, they get a good rinse with vinegar and hot water. Wax and all should be removed with this.
I agree Bud. The alga on each screen in each different tank can certainly be of a different variety. I didn't think you thought algae had roots, but some might think they do from the discussion. ...
I'm not sure dying roots should be an issue. Algae don't have roots and algae uptake nutrients thru their membrane. The the screen should be removed sooner for cleaning if the mass gets thick...
OK so I had to weigh the stuff LOL The mass doubled in the last 14 days :)

Im using the small mesh. Not sure which that is :) Does it make a difference in the growth, type of algae or anything else? Maybe get more flow through the larger mesh? I chose the smaller mesh...
This is the third cleaning of the screen. It's 14 days since the last. Clearly the growth has increased exponentially from the prior. NO3=02 and PO4=.04 (need to reduce this further). Been...
Doing a search on NSW parameters I found this article which may have information for you regarding the issue you're having. I have not read through it so not sure it applies, but it may be useful...
Realized I never posted the correct link to the LEDs I used for this build. So here it is. I used 6 of the red pucks per side. LSMCC series Constant Current SMD LED Sign Module
The specs for...
Oh I also want to add, there is no diffuser. The pucks can be used in a wet environment. They're generally used for exterior signage.
Will do on the pic. I can tell you there are 6 pucks on each side configured in a grid that is 5" wide by 4" top to bottom and that screen is 6"x9". The growth doesn't look too bad from my...
I figured I make a separate thread regarding the results I've obtained so far using the LED pucks I posted in my build thread. I think, for those who would like to use LEDs but do not either have...
Wow. Really sorry to hear this. I was looking forward to seeing your tank grow out. It looks very interesting and different. I guess we've all read about similar situations where a tank is doing...
Not sure of that is in reply to my post, but this is the growth I got after the carbon reactor addition and raising the ph of the system with kalwasser.
...
This is the growth after another ten days. Not sure what's influenced the better/more growth. Maybe just a break in period? I made two changes during this period within the last ten days. First I...
This may have some validity. I just installed a carbon reactor and the growth of algae on the screen has developed exponentially from what it was prior. I will clean the screen tomorrow, which will...
Ok will do :) It was 10 days since the first cleaning - I think LOL Now I'm logging everything on my iPad using ReefKeeper Pro, since I'll never remember when I last cleaned it.
The tank has just about finished cycling. I cleaned the screen once prior. It was just a brown film algae with some small green patches. This is a pic of the first meaningful screen cleaning. ...
This all sounds correct I believe. I think messing with the pH may also disturb the calcification process - it being too high or too low to allow proper calcification.
I've been trying to do...
Hey Smokey. Surprised about the pvc gate valve. They're usually not that hard to come by. Guess the ball valve will have to do.
Go slow when removing the stuff from your sump. Right now it's...
Hey Smokey. Just sitting at the computer doing some work and saw your response come via email :)
Seems like you could cut the mesh to fit the size of the first chamber and not effect things much,...
Yeah the other kind of valve would be a gate valve and they do a much better job of controlling flow. HD and Lowes have them in stock and they're not that expensive.
As I said, you can add...
Yeah unfortunately that type of ball valve isn't very "user friendly". They're best for fully open or fully closed operation.
I'm having difficulty understanding the flow in your sump. Does...
Well make an account LOL It is just another forum. :)
and only part way through it. Maybe someone with much better background on the subject can start to disect it more and glean some valuable info from it for us.
Hope it's allowed :)
Algae!...
After reading a thread on RC about sand beds I'm totally confused and equally totally sure that trapped nutrients from detritus are the reason people experience problems with algae. Now the question...
But maybe it's treating a symptom and not a cause. Yes alga utilize PO4, but they also utilize other nutrients. Now we need to understand which are preferred and which are readily available.
...
LOL well snail poop is waste that further decays and releases ammonia into the water column. If it were suspended and then exported out of the tank and the system, then it wouldn't cause algae to...
Basically that means no one knows what is what :)
There's a lot of death and decay in a reef tank. The nitrogen cycle is responsible for breaking down the harmful elements of the cycle, but...
Hmmm. I was hunting and pecking around the net. I found this site and this article. Nitrate (NO3) and phosphate (PO4) don’t cause algae. Ammonia does!! Now I know what I'm going to hear in terms...
For those that have access to academic literature, maybe someone can obtain this, dissect the information and see if it applies to control of algae in reef aquaria?
Relations between algal...
So it seems this article confirms why the Zeovit system is so concerned with maintaining potassium levels in the system. Interesting. It's also an easy and inexpensive nutrient to maintain. ...
Kalkwasser has a high PH on it's own. I guess dripping it into the overflow whould result in a reduced PH by the time it reaches the scrubber. However I've read where people utilize kalk with...
I was thinking that if higher PH water at the surface of the algae will cause more absorption or utilization of PO4 by the algae on the scrubber screen, one can drip kalwasser into the overflow of...
Oh wow! Opened this past summer. That's when I was running a project six days a week. No wonder I missed it LOL Thanks. I'll have to stop in there soon :)
Edit: The article doesn't say where...
I like their shop. Certainly doesn't look like any LFS I've ever visited LOL I live in NYC. One would think there would be a shop that has the same clean, streamlined look with beautiful displays...
Just wanted to post a pic comparing the two different plastic screens I found. Not sure what everyone is using, but I chose to use the one on the left with the smaller holes. My reasoning was it...
You're going to have to translate all of this when you have it figured out :)
in all the reading I've ever done on carbon dosing and in my experience dosing carbon, a skimmer is a must and part of the equation. It's the method of export needed to effectively utilize dosing as...
It's alive! Ahh hahahahahaha!

Cut slots for the pipe so I can just pull it to clean the screen.
...
You dose 1 GALLON of vinegar per day in a 40 g tank?
60ml seems like an awful lot, but you didn't state what the carbon source is. It's also my opinion that a skimmer and dosing go hand in hand.
For anyone who has knowledge of the Zeovit system, NSW parameters is the target and thus lower ph and lower alk are what's expected as a result. That system manages PO4 export through the use of...
You're welcome :) Now if I only knew what you were talking about that would be even better LOL
Even without a scrubber working on the system, we know that higher ph will precipitate PO4 from the...
Ah yeah. I can make some fins that project down from the pipe and to either side of the slot using grey polystyrene sheet material and plastic weld them on.
Yeah they're generally used for medical purposes I believe. (3/4" In-Line Hose Barb HFC 35 Series Polysulfone Coupling Body - Shutoff) They're fully open when connected and shut once you pull it. ...
Hi Bud. Thanks for the reply. Yes the tank is drilled with one supply and return inside the overflow at the rear. No room for a second sump return. I'm not sure I see the difference between...
To me they look like average copepods, but won't they be reproducing in the tank as you attempt their removal by manual means? How about baiting a trap with meaty food? Glass jar? The other...
I finished the enclosure and did a dry fit in the sump. It looks good. Just hope it works as well as it looks :) I just need to install the LEDs tomorrow.
I cut the slot in the pipe using a...
