Why does this box seem to favour unicellular growth, instead of GHA?

Rky - never seen one that works. SM still sells then though. :(
Read the last two testimonials again SM. why is the success down to algae? And pretty sure Reeftanker on MFUK is no longer running one.
Well I've looked as I am interested, but no, I can't find any successes. Perhaps nobody has bought one yet!
Seems that the new Surf4 has a deeper profile of 3 inch. Curious to know the advantage over the 2 inch Surf2.
I'm English and totally confused. On one thread you show pictures of successfull SURFS2 (?) and another the exact same pictures are described as failing due to iron deficiency. Excuse my ignorance,...
Come on Santa, it's not rocket science? I know you've seen my reply, why ignore it. As a newbie it seems like you ain't got an answer.
...
I've dosed iron (ok, probably not deficient anyway), no change in anything.
Isn't iron always going to be low, if the water goes "around and around before exiting the box", same principle as accelerating algal growth by artificially reducing nutrients in the box?
Any chance of asking him to test the dry weight ratio. It looks very "watery" to me, so in fact may be at the lower end of the dry weight scale, ie 1 or 2% dry weight mass. This would obviously mean...
Makes sense with regard to the nutrient availability bit. Could do with a few pictures of successful Upflow Algae Growing boxes. I know Floyd has one but I don't think he likes it?,
I was under the impression that Floyds scrubbers are the dogs danglies. Not a weak scrubber, probably the best :)
I'm curious - considering your not exporting algae, are you waterchanging at all.
But macroalgae and single cell algae can assimilate organic substances, can't they? So even if the inorganics test low, it may be that the N & P is bound organically, and this would then be scavenged...
Yuk. I can see why you are concerned. These bubbly things do work though, don't they? If not, I'll try one of Floyds waterfall scrubbers.
Sorry - changed the link, I put the wrong one on previously
I thought these didn't work - http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=21935862
So what are the disadvantages over the UAS I was going to try?
Found this old book online - http://archive.org/stream/metabolismofalga00fogg#page/50/mode/2up
Chapter III suggests a mechanism for algae growth in the dark, using amino acids and sugars....
Cheers. My brain don't work the same as most folk, but why not suspend the light above the scrubber, and immobilise the scrubber base?
Why do you want it sealed? Is it just to reduce noise?
Perhaps one type of algae contains more water, than another type. So although the growth may be more, the algae goodness taken from the water to grow to that size could actually be less.
Thanks Mr Flod. Seems this algae growing thingy isn't as simple as its made out to be. I think I will trying a version of it soon. Not sure how to put photos up though so hopefully you can help me...
I'm lazy and ain't searched, but have you got a photo of your tank mate?
I'm new but I thought the aim was to grow green algae, not slime. Perhaps it's got it's benefits though ;)
Hello Mr. Flyod. Have you been doing this long? Are you saying that algae may grow great but actually export little?
It's a bit sad when folks have spent $300 on summit that don't work :(
Wouldn't that mean an algae grown in low nutrients actually exports less nutrients than one grown in higher nutrients. Baffled.com.
Bit baffled about the growing algae to combat algae idea but;
I've got a bit of roughed up Perspex thats been in my sump from the year dot. If I add bubbles, will I accelerate algae growth and...
I've read somewhere that algae can grow in 40 parts per billion, for both nitrate and phosphate. Now, that's really low.
Or slow down the return pump
If your running a massive skimmer, this would be a cheap mans version of the Triton method.
Been reading through some of your recent troubles and it was mentioned somewhere that you need algae eaters. Perhaps that is the only difference. Good news in any case.
That's confused me. I thought it was the tank he wanted filtering. So growing algae on rubbish water is no good, it's gotta be clean to grow?
Wow, this looks great. Im new here. Is there a link to pictures of successful Upflow Algae Growing boxes here somewhere? Thanks.
