  1. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

No, it's for a resort. Sorry to disappoint!

Thanks for the suggestions. If they do decide to go with an ATS with this system it's going to be an intersting set up, that's for sure.

  2. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

Not sure how I could incoorporate an outdoor scrubber set up but I'll keep it in mind. Appreciate all the suggestions!

  3. Re: carbon source dosing in conjuction with the use of an ATS???

That's good to know. I would think that the carbon dosing would outcompete and drive nutrients so low that the algea (on the ATS) would have nothing to feed on. Sounds like you negated that by...
  4. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

We're in Wisconsin so an outdoor anything for a fish tank is pretty much out of the question. 95 degrees in the summer and 0 or lower in winter.

  5. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

Wow!!! Thanks for the very detailed responses everyone. It truly is appreciated!!!

Considering I don't quite know how much room I have to work with I can't commit to any one design but I'll...
  6. carbon source dosing in conjuction with the use of an ATS???

I've had lots of experience with carbon dosing and about three months ago I stopped the carbon dosing and started up my first ATS. The ATS has done very well at managing nutrients but I'm just...
  7. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

Thanks! Too bad I'd need around a hundred for average filtration of a 15,000 gal shark tank.

In general, it sounds like your using more powerful lighting and more flow to maximize filtration. In...
  8. Re: need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

"Most filtering for the size" is the most important factor. Cost being second in line.

    Thanks.

  9. need advice on building an algae scrubber for a shark tank

Helping a friend upgrade the filtration on a shark tank. Since $ is a limiting factor, we opted for an ATS as part of the filtration. Unfortunatley I don't have the dimensions on the amount of space...

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

I really don't think my flow is too slow either. Here is a link to a U-tube video showing my flow.

It's quite even throughout and equal on both sides....

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

    Yep that's the one!

    ****EDIT****
I should clarify. 40 watt CFL equivalent to a 150 watt incandescent (just like the 23 watt CFL is equal to a 100 watt incandescent).

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

It doesn't have a bald area where the light is most powerful, it merely has a different type of algae in that area making it look very different where the light is most intense. That algae is much...

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

OK Tom. Here is a bit more detail and the various pics you requested.

Scrubber is 17 in wide and about 16 in long. Lit on both sides with 150watt CF bulbs, 2700K, regular CF bulbs used with 8in...

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

OK. Here are a few pics of what I'm talking about. When I wipe the bubbles off I get a small amount of red slimey material coming off which seems like cyano.

    Re: bubbles/foam on scrubber

My apologies Tom. I must have been a bit hypoxic when I typed the flow rate!! I meant to say 35-40 gph/square inch of horizontal screen. My screen is 17 in wide and 14 in long (lit on both sides). My...

    bubbles/foam on scrubber

    Hello.

I've been running my ATS for about a month and a half. I'm starting to get a nice layer of turf in the middle on both sides (where the light is most intense). I'm sure if I did more with...
  19. Re: Flow rate for ATS?? 1 sided vs 2 sided flow rates??

    Thanks.

My screen consists of two layers of solid poly and a mesh screen layered over the top. I also roughed up the screen with the hole saw bit as shown in one of the FAQ links. If I find the...
  20. Flow rate for ATS?? 1 sided vs 2 sided flow rates??

    Hello.

My apologies if this info is posted somewhere but I looked extensively and couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

The general rule of thumb (from what I've read) is to run an ATS at...
