It as been a over three years, since I build my SM100. It has been a very great success, no water changes, all numbers been steady at 0, only thing I have to do is add RO and Salt. No algae issue...
It has been over a year now and no water changes. I add salt when the salinity level goes down, and i dose some iron, but other then that, I top off with RO.
Tank is probably better then it has...
Thanks... I will give it a try.
the way my lights are set, they actually extend out beyond both sides of the screen. The lights are 15" long and the screen is 6". As I have been working trying to increase the flow, I have noticed...
The 16 hours looks better. I did not clean the screen after last week, just the slot area. the growth is a lot better on the end away from the inflow. The flow is a lot better on that end also.

Actually my first layer of tape was adhesive side up, or away from the water/slot, then used two layers of tape to hold that tape to the tube. Then wrapped tape around tube to hold in place. Other...
I just put electrical tape over my slot and a few rounds, around the pipe. sealed the slot just fine. That way I can go back to a large screen, if I decide to in the future
the light is pretty will spread out. As you can tell it is the strongest in the center with the top 3/4" and bottom 1 1/2" receiving the least. of course the bottom 3/4 to 1" are submersed. I may...
This is 17 hours, still dosing FE 3ml per day. The center was brown and the top and bottom green, both sides. At this point I clean the area at the top, and the slot and put it back in, with the...
When I have to drop my tank, I put eveything in a large plastic tub. I then drop a pump in the tub, attach to some pipe and and create a spraybar to circulate the water. I put rock, snails, fish...
I am not really sure if it has made a difference or not. I am still attempting to dial in the length of time on the lights and the Iron dosing. At this point am attempting to only vary one variable...
I dissolve one Fergon tablet in 100 ml of water. I have been dosing 3 ml of that solution once a day. 45 gal plus sump, about 50 gals. Got the Fergon at the drug store, it is an iron supplement. ...
ok I will give it a tray
Thanks
Here is 14 hours, still dosing 3ml of iron solutions. the algae had a lot better growth. not as slimy. it was really attached to the screen a lot better. quite a bit of growth in the water. I am...
The growth in my main tank looks just like yours.

Thanks for the reply.
A week ago, when I was at 17 hours, I had the yellow-rubbery growth. Same as I had when I had the larger screen. The only way I got the green was to cut it to 15 hours and...
I built a SM100 clone and started using it in Aug, 2011. I am utilizing a screen that I started with in Nov. of 2010. (see other threads started earlier)
Since moving to the SM100, my tank has...
I just followed the instruction on the two areas I gave you, the pin technique works great. Get a good rotor bit to trim off the excess. I originally tried to glue it up, without leaving a little...
I used silcone on my first project when I first started 5 or 6 years ago. I built the overflow/weir on melevsreef. I worked took a while to set up and I am actually still using it. Silcone works...
I use Weld-on 3 or 4. 3 acts very quick, but once you learn the proper technique, it works great. Then used weld-on 14 on the seams after the initial set up, to take care of any leaks. You will...
Seems to work fine. Just ordered one. I forgot to put a password it, but I put an email address in. So of course, it will not let me log in and it will not let me reset my password.
Have even...
I have now been using an AS for about a year now. My first one was a screen hanging down and a CFL on each side in a reflector. I was working but, I didn't think fast enough. This summer I built...
I used a 100 tooth finish plywood blade. set the blade all the way below the table. set the fence about 1/2" from the blade. marked the pipe and the fence so I knew where to start and stop.
...
I user my table saw. Gives me a straight and consistent slot. It is also right at 1/8" wide.

I always thought the workhorse ballast were good...do you have another suggestion?
Thanks

A patent and a copyright are only as good as your pocket is deep. They will keep honest people honest. I hate to say it, if someone big wants to steal your idea, then you have to take them to court...
So how do you tell if you need a new screen?

Mine is the same way..It has some green but mainly brown

I do still have a lot of rock algae, that was may objective a year a ago, when I built my first scrubbers. It was not very effective, but did reduce the tank algae. After completing my SM clone, I...
OK...So then I should cut back the iron and or discontinue, correct. I have opened up the gate value on the main pipe that feeds the scrubber to increase the flow to the scrubber. My refugium is...
sorry about that

Here is my normal seven day cleaning. I altered the slot on day two but did not clean. It appears to have more even growth but color is lacking a green. flash on the camera actually give a more...
I also have a lot of surface movement. Utilize a spray bar down two sides for water return, with a over flow box for water return. Switched to a beananimal full siphon, to increase the flow even...
Just completed smoothing out and widening the slot. I checked the slot and found if had some slight variance, form 1/8 to slightly less then that. It also was not smooth or straight. Instead of...
I cut it with a table saw, which should be a 1/8" wide cut, based on the width of the blade plus the cut overage. I actually flipped the tube last week, because I was getting more growth on the far...
Floyd:
Took your suggestion, cut a new pipe without the slots. I have been adding FE, I am up to three times a week 3ml per dose, 9ml last week.

I would build two boxes, one out of acrylic the other out of wood, then drop the acrylic box into the wood one. That way you pull the acrylic one out for cleaning or repair if necessary. I like to...
Without the crosscuts, i had more flow at the water entry end of the pipe and a lot less at the end. The cross cuts helped to even it out. I am not having any issues with algae growing up in the...
I added crosscuts the first of August. My original scrubber had them but I built this one I did not initially have them. When I added them I made them to large and had to reduce them.

How much of the liquid do you dose at a time? What is the volume of you system?
thanks

total system has been up and running for one week now. Have both sides light using 37W U shaped CFL on both sides. Have re-plumbed system and gone from a Mag 3 to a Mag 9 pump. With head loss...
You can build an external overflow box, like this one http://www.melevsreef.com/acrylics/overflow.html That is what I have been using for years.
If I was going to start all over. I would have...
I changed my durso drains over to Bean Animal/Calfo drains and I more then doubled my flow. 1" return pipe using Durso 120GPH. same overflow changed to a Bean Animal system 257 GPH. This is using a...

I have finally got everything rebuild and operational. I essentially took the SM100 and adapted it to my sump. I took the screen that I started last November, it is 13 X 5 and turned it with the...
well I realized my problem...my pump. I am running a Mag 3. Plenty of flow for a 45 gal, marginal flow for a 5" wide, but not sufficient for a 13" wide. Looks like with my head pressure, I am...
