Bought the other one now. I'll let you know how I get on with it
Thanks for the input folks, I'll order one.
Not seen one like this mentioned on here before, apologies if already discussed
What do we think? It appears different to the other "floodlight" type LED lamp in that it has the LEDs spread...
Yes I know. But as I say, this was running for maybe 8 weeks and was cleaned weekly and there was no sign of any salt creep or splashing until now. Quite bizarre.
Yes, it had two sheets of thin perspex joined together with cable ties & hung over the pipe.
It was running for perhaps two months with no problems at all, and was still running fine when I found...
Three are off. Went to clean it and this is what it looked like. Amazingly two thirds of the LEDs were still working.
No idea how it happened, it wasn't wet but obviously had been as it's caked in...
LED lamps do not like to be splashed
Dunno about the US, but here in the UK frozen cubes come in different sizes.

I have had other sizes too
Incidentally, one possible problem with your design is that the chamber which receives the water from the overflow is very shallow. You might find that the water/air mixture from the overflow will...
I built one similar to that design a couple of year ago. Mine just had a sheet of glass siliconed across the back of the sump to create a separate chamber and a plastic canvas screen which was...
There's already a plasma light available for reef tanks.
It's called "Seashine". http://straylightoptical.com/products/aquarium
Costs a fortune though, over a thousand US$ per unit I understand
Most of them are Kenya Trees (spreads like weed, have to keep pulling it out) which are always brown. The finger leathers have both been moved recently so they're adjusting and not at their best -...

Never owned a skimmer.
Started reefing 3 years ago and have only ever used live rock & scrubbers (of different designs).
The only water changes I have done in that time have been when I changed...
Ran my current 200 litre system sumpless for 6 months. Built a long horizontal scrubber into the tank. Wasn't very efficient (did work though) and there was a problem with salt creep so I reinstalled...
Why "Belgian", when you're in Sweden?
Sounds good enough.
They're Chinese. Go figure.
Cheap though, and if they work.... so what?
Shouldn't imagine it'd do much harm unless you were going to pour the whole lot down in one go.
Personally I add it to the top off water which is on an auto top up thing so gets slow dosed (into...
Dunno about Mud but mine were on Ebay (UK site). Shipped from China.
Still listed
...
Thanks for the update. Glad to hear they're working out.
I'm in the UK so mine are on 220v - don't have any way of checking the wattage but they don't seem very bright (I had them over a lit fuge...
Be interested in hearing an update on this one from "Mud"
I am using the same lamps (although on a two sided waterfall design) but suspect that they are underpowered rather than overpowered.
...
Well that wasn't very successful. There was a little 3D growth but not anything like as much as required (left it for 9 or 10 days)
So this is the version 2 (video quality not good, but you can...
Wouldn't bother. I used to have a lot of bubble algae (although nothing like your problem). It seems pretty immune to light deprivation. I even took a piece of rock with bubbles and put it in the...
Not sure I follow. The screen is on the bottom of the sump, the bubbles are blown across it by the venturis.
1st attempt
Bit rough & ready. The canvas screen is pre-grown so already green (this is day 1). Used some spare bits of rock to weigh it down
Couple of venturi powerheads provide flow and...
Thanks SM.
So I guess it'd need quite a hefty air pump to cover a larger area.
Maybe the venturi idea would be better.
I have an idea to convert my sump to a large flat algae growing area something akin to SMs new floating scrubber but much larger.
I'd have a false raised bottom/screen with a rough surface & with...
Excellent!
I had the very same idea a while back but never built it.
Hope it works well for you.
SM, how long are the ribbons/strings?
And how deep is the chamber?
Got some photos or a video of that?
Looks good. A touch noisy though (bubbles)
How long did it take to grow to that stage?
Do you think this is as efficient as a waterfall?

Curious to know how you're going to create turbulence across the screen. Assuming you have bubbles emitting from the surface somehow?
Saw these on Ebay the other day and considered trying one...
I've used a oscillating multi-tool with a metal saw attachment to do this and it works really well.
But I wonder if the type of roughness that a saw type thing can produce is ideal?
What looks...
It's interesting but what's the advantage?
Good idea. Thanks.
Look forward to seeing that.
So it might be better then, to cut the 1m strip of leds into 3 x 33cm lengths, make the scrubber a little wider, 3 inches and arrange the strips in parallel so that the light was evenly spread.
...
Cheers You don't think the placement of the LEDs might be an issue with something that narrow?
I was thinking of using 4 x 3w but perhaps 6 or 8 lower wattage ones might be better?
Or something...
Sounds interesting. I take it'll just use the tank lights?
Forgot to mention, obviously the glass between the chamber and the lights would need regular cleaning which would present a problem if the chamber were to be fixed.
Thought this might be achieved...
Considering building a trial long narrow UAS which could fit into (or be built into) the rear corner of a tank and illuminated from behind (like SMs HOG versions)
Thinking of having it (for my...
Have you considered breaking down the tank completely? Then you could get rid of the worm and the mantis and perhaps replace some or all of the rock?
The existing rock you might be able to recycle...
Maybe because the sheer volume of algae growing elsewhere is using up the nutrients before it gets to the scrubber?
I'd pull some of it out by hand or get something to eat it. A big sea hare or a...
Top secret I'm afraid.
Need to know basis don't you know.
All very hush hush

This stuff here

Well you know that stuff that they use to make magnetic car signs and fridge magnet things with? I assume it is just flat magnetic material coated in plastic?
How about that?
I've noticed that hair algae in the tank often grows well on cables feeding heaters and powerheads.
I wonder if that is a similar effect?
Denitrate is purposely designed to provide a very beneficial environment for denitrifying bacteria (and it works very well for that purpose)
Therefor it is possible that it was depriving the algae...
