I use two of them on my waterfall scrubber and they don't seem...
I use something similar in a waterfall type scrubber. They work fine. Keep in mind that they are NOT WATERPROOF, but only water resistant. You cannot run these submerged.
Carbon is really only a temporary filtering situation. It quickly stops being effective in about a day or so. As was noted, it helps to make your water clearer - so use it if you want that.
I...
These lights work fine. Keep in mind that they are not 100% waterproof.
I had one of these short out because of salt spray, even though it seemed to be sealed very well.
I have used a check valve with the air pump on the floor of my cabinet without any problems. Now, the airpump manufacturers say you should not have the pump located lower than the water level in...
Too high wattage from an LED fixture can inhibit growth and "burn" it.
Keep in mind that the flow over the screen also is a factor. Higher flow rates of water allow you to use higher wattage...
A couple of questions.
1. How much air are you running through the HOG1? I can't see any bubbles from your picture, so I wonder if you don't have enough.
2. How much are you feeding daily. ...
Be careful. The current strips are "water resistant" not totally waterproof.
I suspect that they would short out if submerged.
There are some lights available that are 100% waterproof...
Using these strips would work, but would be somewhat expensive. They also would take up a lot of room which you may not have.
There are less expensive lighting alternatives out there using red...
Isn't the setup being discussed here a one sided waterfall scrubber?
The calculated 192 is for a horizontal??
I had a similar problem. Harvesting the algae should be done normally - keep in mind the algae growing there uses the Nitrate and Phosphate.
What I did to reduce the phosphate was to look at...
Yes I tried one. Did not work as you don't have strong enough LED's on that panel. All that panel does is give you a nice warm red glow.
They try to sell these as panels for growing plants, but...
I have had good results with a piece of diffuser plastic - the plastic diffuser used for ceiling lighting works well to spread out the light.
You can find this stuff at Home Depot or similar...
CTS,
you make a valid point that not all LED's that say they are royal blue or red are actually the wavelengths that are optimum for algae growth.
Something that says it is a 660nm may be in...
Welcome,
You have some good questions
The answers you will get here are based on trial and error from folks who have been using algae scrubbers for years.
There are a lot of variables, the...
position them about 3 inches away from the screen to start.
try putting some clear plastic over the top of the screen - I use a cut plastic storage bag.
This will help control the water. The plastic will actually stick to the wet screen.
An ATS will help, but probably not eliminate bubble algae by itself.
I have bubble algae in my tank, it is a minor issue compared to the hair algae and bryopsis issues that I am using a ATS to...

I have some issues with these strips.
1. They...

Still using the same light. Actually now two of them as I made my waterfall scrubber two sided.
The screen is 5 inches wide by 8 long with the lights concentrated on the top 4 inches or so - the...
If your DT is only 24 Gal. you probably do not need both an algae scrubber and a skimmer.
An upflow scrubber would probably work fine.
Whether or not you need a reactor or not depends on...
Bryopsis outbreaks usually happen because of problems with water chemistry - usually low magnesium.
I have had fairly good results raising magnesium levels in my tank using Kent M..
...
3 cubes per day of feeding is an awful lot of food for a 29Gal tank. What are you planning to put in it?
I think the theory is you end up spreading the algae out over the larger screen and missing out on some of the filtering capability you may get with denser growth.
A longer screen to reach the water in the sump should not matter very much if you concentrate the light on the effective area. I currently have a longer screen with lights concentrated near the top...
I bit more water in your sump will bring the end of your screen underwater and stop most of the splashing noise.
You may also want to put some plastic wrap over the top to help with spray. I use...
You should be getting something in the scrubber. It sounds like your screen is rough enough.
Could be the light.
let's check. You have a 12 Watt LED. What color? How many watts does this...
Some questions:
You have 14 RED LED's - what wattage?
How many hours are you lighting your screen?
How close are your LED's to your screen?
I am using one of these [30 Watt] on a waterfall scrubber I have installed. It works fairly well. I am getting good dark green to medium green growth.
What I like about it is that you can move...
I agree with SM, I would check your LED's.
You should aim at at least .5 Watts of LED [red] for each sq. inch of area for 16 to 18 hours per day. This is actual watts - you may not actually be...
A UAS scrubber would work as SM suggested as well.
There are many ways to do this. It depends on how much room you have, what lighting you want to use for the scrubber and so on.
I...
Waterfall scrubbers seem to work better for larger size tanks. You also can use the water from the overflow in your tank without having to put in an extra air pump with one.
I would start with a...
The size of the screen depends on how much you feed your tank. Look at the sizing guidelines posted on this site.
I don't recommend using macroalgae and a scrubber in the same system. They will...
Take a look at the sizing guidelines for scrubbers. The size of your screen depends on the amount of food you feed your tank.
A waterfall type scrubber or a horizontal scrubber may work in this...
The Great Barrier Reef Aquarium used an algae scrubber for quite a while as a major part of their filtration system. What they did, although using trays of algae, was not the same application as an...
I ran my 29 gal. system with a handmade UAS - with approx. 6 X 5" of surface area with red and blue LED's for about 5 months.
Found that the Nitrates always measured 0 and Phosphate was at .03 to...
This should work for a ATS, keep in mind that although it says it is waterproof, the rating means it is sealed and water resistant. It will be fine for an ATS , but not as an underwater light.
...
I wouldn't go with that. You can put in a waterfall scrubber in your fuge - you seem to have room - and use plastic wrap to keep spray under control. If the slot is big enough and you use...
The basics of building a waterfall scrubber are contained in the FAQ section of this board.
Is the mess in your sump from spray or what? Not sure how it would cause a skimmer fits either. ...
That light is too powerful. You may want to get something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/111156677896?var=410208250366&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
or use a CFL bulb...
Welcome to the hobby.
For a tank that size I recommend using a waterfall type algae scrubber. The size of the scrubber will depend on how much livestock you put into the tank and how much you...
Some burning in the middle of a screen when you get good growth around the edges is not totally bad. I have had this condition on mine and found that the scrubber still did the job of keeping...
I found in my experience that I needed to clean out the sump crud before the increased lighting and flow did any good to help clean up DT algae.
For about the same price you can get a PAR38 bulb with red/green LED's in the proper spectrum or for cheaper a red/green LED floodlight. Lots of them on sale on ebay. Just be careful to pick with...
From reading through many posts here and my experience with this over the last 2 years there seems to be some basic fixes for common algae scrubber problems.
Obviously each tank is different so...
If you wiggled the LED's at all you could have broken a wire somewhere. This would cause it to not work.
The optics actually fit into slight depressions in the cover plate on these types of lamps. You put the cover plate face down on a flat surface and place the optics in them, then to put the plate...
These are very underpowered for an ATS
Your new setup should work.
You mentioned that you ordered an LED growlight. When you get it and set it up post here.
The CFL light you now have should work. You will need to let the...
