thanks for all the help guys:) I went up to 16 hours a day 2 days ago. It seems to be helping
Well afew weeks ago I upgraded my lights on my scrubber from led par lamps to propper phillips luxon 3 watt leds. There are 4 660 and 2 royal blue (at half power) on each side of my 5"x5" screen that...
ok thanks SM! I have to do something because my current setup does not allow me to put the light where I need it on the screen.
do you think it would be possible to use the overflow water rather than an air pump? maybe make fixed shallow tray design just above the sump and use a (J) shaped pipe to turn the overflows flow...
Wow that's a lot of strings! What keeps them from tanging and making it hard to clean?
ok cool thanks. So I am thinking a 5"x10"x3" container with 2 holes for bubbles,2 drain holes, epoxy and sand/chips substrate, a dozen nylon strings, and maybe 5 three watt red led's and one blue 3...
how does the surf compare to a waterfall? and why don't you have to bring the unit to the sink? (avoid green water)
ho big would a surf need to be for 3 cubes plus 1 oz phyto ?
taller algae strands?
how critical is the water level? and on the last picture are the airline tubes connected to the 1/2"(looking) holes? or do the bubbles just naturally enter the holes??
wow! thanks man!!
Ok but where does the air enter? Where do the drains go? Is there an airstone,or is that substrate full of holes?
I think I would like to try and build a surf type scrubber(if you don't mind SM) But I would need more info on how the water and air flow through this kind of scrubber. It looks like you could use a...
good point rleahaines, sometimes we cant see the forest through the trees! But I do think my scrubber was a little weak due to the burning only because I was getting some algae in the display.
Looks like a vertical UAS. Looks like you would clip it to the sump or tank rim just below the waterline. It looks like a good design IMO . Almost like a clip-on scrubber,I think floyd should build...
Well I have tried everything to get my led's to work but nothing works! I still get a giant burn spot in the middle, and when I remove the optics I get next to no growth. So What I did is I screwed in...
With all this talk of led this and led that ,I can't help but think that in the next few years we will be lighting our scrubbers and displays with plasma and led will be a thing of the past. Plasma...
ok thanks
Ok I will move the lights back about 2". Thanks guys!
ok I will post a pic of growth in 10 days! oct 10th ish :)
the screen does look a little darker in the pics than it is in life
lol the pics above! BUT I will get more today and include the lights lol
What do you think??
I replaced all the red optics, and the two blue optics on the outside edge,as far as the center blues I took sandpaper to them to "fog" them
3 center reds I think and 8 outside reds
here are some pics! I decided to forget about things like skimmers, vodka, and foods until I get my screen up to snuff. I ran this tank for years without issue using nothing but my old scrubber. I must...
what does dark growth mean? My "burn" spots are filling in a little but the screen is much darker than before. Before removing the optics my growth was light green and fluffy with giant burnt...
Just wondering what you used to test and replenish k? Also I have read that many shelll fish contain large amounts of k so if you feed some shellfish would you have to dose??
If you have your system running on a GFCI there is no stray voltage. You can not just test the water for voltage ,there will always be something there due to the ions in the water. Don't believe me?...
the algae should grow in faster where the flow is more on the screen thus slowing it down or diverting the flow to the ares that had less flow
ok why not? i will throw the skimmer online & try to get my scrubber screen up to snuff
I am starting to find the same floyd. It seems when I ran a skimmer my LPS did great and my soft corals would wither away. Now it is reversed! I wonder if it is because soft corals need more food and...
Ok santa I will do that,I did not want to go to crazy with it and have to start all over that's all. Bud,do you still run a skimmer? Just wondering.....
here are some more pics of hard corals that did not make it
another thing that has been bothering me for a long time is the decline of my hammer coral, this was my first and oldest coral,I have had this coral for well over ten years! This coral used to grow...
ok how long should I let it grow now? and what should I look for as far as the burnt spot goes?
ok is this clean enough? I also some pics of display and display algae
ok i will re-clean and post more pics
the pics are post cleaning today.
bud: 1.the burnt area turned brown the day after it started to get green the green area just did not grow much this week and got a much darker shade.
2.no
3.no...
found an old sd card...
well I removed the optics and my "burnt" spot started to turn green. I cleaned the screen just to keep the flow going strong but today I have noticed that my algae has hardly grown any and it is very...
Nothing is built well thease days! It was the power supply/driver portion of the bulb that burnt out
Yea floyd odd but I did buy brand new lamps a while back when one burnt out..
this is the part where someone jumps in and makes the claim that skimmers are more natural because they mimic wave action that washes foam up on the beach. IMO this thinking does not hold water...
You guys know your stuff! The bare spots are turning green! I never would have guessed. Learn something every day...now let's see if the display algae starts to fade......
What I have learned and am still learning is that a propperly set up scrubber will do the trick,it does not need to be extra large or extra hi power,it just needs to work properly! Post some pics and...
you could remove some algae by hand then do 2 or 3 days lights out in the main display,,at least that would clean things up a bit..
ok the optics are removed! removed all the blues and the center reds. I will try to get a pic or link soon.
Thanks floyd,I will try that later today ,I will also try to post pics.
forgot, I also wanted to ask about the main tank lighting. Over my display I am running 12 cree royal blue,2 cree royal purple(almost UV) for 12 hours per day and 12 cree cool whites for 9 hours per...
ok Im not sure how the screen is burning only on one side, but I guess it is :(
So now what option is the best option? 1. Move lights a greater distance away and leave the optics in place.
