Just a little update here. I put my crappy skimmer back online, and almost immediately saw improvements for the whole tank. After just two week I am starting to see some polyps were there has been...
Going with no skimmer for well over a year. My ATS took a very long time to reach equilibrium. Now it does a good job, my N and P has been 0 for over 6 months....well 0 as far as test kits are...
Couple months later and i would have to say my scrubber is finally "up to speed". My phosphates got down to 0 and since then have never gone above .07. I haven't changed my GFO in well over 3 months,...
PE basically unchanged with the new carbon...so it isn't that. still on the drawing board.
thinking the same way Floyd. I don't have one on hand worth plugging in, but keeping my eyes open for something external.
I half been doing half cup of Rox carbon every two weeks, but was due to...
carbon yes skimmer no. alk 7.3 , ca 420
also, i do have a duplicate post from a couple weeks ago, just looking for a fresh perspective.
Over the past couple months, after almost a year my ATS has gotten all the nutrients down and is growing actual hair algae, turf algae, and even chaeto. It seems to be doing a fine job of keeping N...
carbon already there....brs rox and only 2 weeks old
I am not too thrilled about it!!!
I am still seeing growth which is promising...but I am a fan of polyps, I want them out! My alk is stabilized now, I am really hoping that was it and i will see...
Pretty much coinciding with my screen cleaning, my polyps on my SPS have receded and are not showing themselves for about 3 weeks. I took a couple frags to a friends and they came out with a few...
I tried the next size up CFL but it won't even power up in the socket I currently have. I don't know if they even sell a reflector type light that would support it, since I only ever see 1 model at...
I do like my scrubber, it does grow some algae. However, it seems to be slow and just doesn't get the job done. My nitrates got to zero and are now staying there, but my phosphates just won't get...
I lost a ton of my zoas when I first started my ATS. Now they are coming back big time. I don't know your exact situation, but I believe in my case the rock was releasing bound up phosphates and this...
I like the idea of kalkwasser as well, but I just installed a Tunze ATO and am apprehensive to run kalk through it as it could reduce the useful life of the pump.
good stuff thanks. I think I'll go ahead and grab a couple, seems like they are going well enough for you and I'll get at least as good as CFL without having to do bulb changes
Why did you end on the one you chose. For example, this one is significantly less and looks similar.

very interested to see the results here as I was about to run the same experiment on my ATS. I currently have 2 - 23 watt CFL bulbs. They certainly look cooler with that alien red purple tinge!
Unless the tang dies and is stuck under rocks where you can't get it!! That's what happened to me.
GFO worked for me. Once my nitrates ran out the phosphates started creeping up. The screen still grows, I find I don't need to clean it as often, and it probably helps the GFO last longer as well.
interesting idea.
I moved my phosphate remover from before the scrubber section of my sump to the 'after'. I tested the phosphates again this week and they are moving in the right direction. Down to .09 now, I am...
anyone else care to chime in that is less black and white?
If I had plenty of N I would think my Phosphates could go down as the algae grew as well, especially with phosphate reducing media and...
It is on the glass in the sump right beside the scrubber, as well as directly underneath it on the rocks....so the light theory doesn't make sense if it grows where the light is lower and the glass...
just re-read this post, as now that my N is gone my P is lingering around .15 for the last couple weeks. I think I am going to add a light and get my chaeto going again. I also have never gotten hair...
water change, scrubber clean, phosphate media changed monday. phosphates still at .15 tonight. I'll check again in a couple days to see where it goes. Still not there yet.
I know it is my...
no and I don't think I will just let. I got a Hanna checker and my real reading is .14, so still some work to do. It is more accurate than the crappy API I have been using.
well well, 1st time ever I have 0 nitrates and 0 phosphates on API. Guess it's time for that hanna checker now that it will be of value!
Things are looking better than ever, and for the first time...
Did my nitrate test again on Sunday night. Best results yet, nitrates are way low. Before was between 10-20 in color, now I am definitely less orangey and down to 5-10. Hoping for bright yellow soon....
Ace, appreciate the insight. I am not getting green growth after a few months, I almost end up with brown sheets of this algae that just peels off. If this 11 x 1 watt bulb should be twice the 23...
:) - you may be right, these are not the most accurate!
They beat the living crap our the API Phosphate though, this is just a waste of money!
I don't want to reduce the screen, because I ultimately want to feed a lot more to have more fish and feed corals aggresively. However, with the higher nutrients, I cannot get myself to feed that...
It's been a long time since I posted, but I continue to still get brown/yellow growth that I clean every 2-3 weeks. I have seeded with HA from other places in my sump but it just doesn't take. My...
Has anyone ever tried these?

There are simliar versions with...
lovin this thread. very intresting. I am still fighting down N and haven't had this problem yet, but it will be good to know when I finally get it down.
Your copperband can handle the nitrates, fish generally aren't affected by lowish nitrates. This is more of a concern for corals. That said, I have read a lot about copperbands being finicky eaters...
My scrubber is sized using the new guidelines. I am good for 4 cubes...I am interested to feed a lot to my tank and would prefer to have more fish if I can get my parameters in check.
I am...
SantaMonica,
I do believe I am underpowered, unfortunately my bad sump design doesn't allow me to get a real nice scrubber going. The reflectors take up a lot of space and I can't get them...
Not much to update here. I am still fighting off nitrates, others have posted that once the phosphates are gone that this can happen. I believe due to the bad shape of my system, that equilibrium is...
Well I decided for my mental sanity to remove the corals that were nearly dead to get them outta my sight. I have to admit it feels a lot better looking at the tank without those (mostly) skeleton...
Well as my euphyllia have continued to die off.....the nitrates still hang around 20ppm. I have tried leaving the algae to grow thicker. It's gotten really red on one side and starting to see some...
wow, this is looking good.
Well cleaned off the dark brown/black gunk again this week. I have some nice GHA growing on the glass on one of the sump baffles and on a couple rocks in the sump. I pulled it off and stuck it to my...
I don't actually disturb the sandbed, I just get the siphon close enough that any crud sitting gets sucked up. The sand pretty much stays in place, the water doesn't cloud or anything. I don't think...
After the last cleaning, my screen has gone back to dark brown/nearly black covering in a couple of days.
The one difference is that the flow has increased substantially after cleaning the tubing...
Decided to do a cleaning today, just because it's been nearly 2 weeks.

I have some actual green on there now. As always it looks a...
"The scrubber at Harbor Point is the same one used two years ago at Peach Bottom nuclear power plant on the Susquehanna, where it was estimated it removed 640 pounds of nitrogen and 90 pounds of...
That looks pretty green, I see some hairy stuff there too. Looking good!
Alright! Back on topic!!!
I decided to not do the early clean last week to see what would happen. it seems that was a good plan as I am starting to get some green growth. There also seems to be...
he likes it! Hey Mikey! :)
