Screen Attachment and Detachment

I have been browsing the forums and have a few questions. First, I saw a post saying that cutting cross slots into the pipe is no longer recommended, but it did not say what is now recommended. Second, I know I can cut a long slit into the pvc pipe to insert the screen, but how do I make sure it will stay there?

I intend on putting the scrubber in a large plastic bin placed on top of my sump. However, this leaves little room to access the top of the scrubber. When pulling the screens out to clean them do you remove the screen from the pipe or remove the whole pipe to do so. I basically need a convenient way to attach and detach the screens for cleaning. Any ideas?

You should remove the pipe with the screen, and clean the slot too:
