    winning the cyano battle :)

about 2 weeks ago cyano was taking over my tank so i made some major changes. I did a 90% waterchange using tropic marin salt ,I put a larger size screen in my scrubber, and I removed 50% of my rock work to allow more flow. I also cut back my feedings to every other day. the cyano is 95% gone!!! now how do i keep it GONE and still feed every day?

It's just a matter of keeping your scrubber stronger than how much you feed.

Also, for cyano, the flow-through in the scrubber is important: If you can increase the flow into and out of the scrubber, it will be more effective against cyano even with the same screen size and wattage. Matter of fact, with liquid feedings for corals (which put lots of nutrients into the water instantly), very high scrubber flow-through is needed.

ok then maybe you can help me decide how much flow I "should" have.

my tank is 45gallons with 10 more gallons in the sump

it's a fully stocked reef with a tang and all

I want to feed one cube, one 2"x2" sheet of nori, and one tsp of liquid per day.

the scrubber is 10" x 16" with 4 cfl lamps

right now I have a mag (5) witch should pump about 300-400gph after head loss

should i be shooting for more flow than this with my system??

It's the teaspoon of liquid that will cause cyano. I don't have any flow numbers... the more the better.

should i just skip the liquid coral food or try to increase scrubbing to compensate? I have cut way back on my feedings and things look great but I just dont want to have a new cyano outbreak,,ya know?

Just experiment, and give it a full month between changes.
