    Many people are.

If your sand is deep, you'll need to guard against hydrogen sulfide. You'll want to do very small parts at one time, and do big waterchanges after each one. And you'll want to run lots of GAC the whole time.

If it's not deep, you should be able to pull it all out at once, although you'll want to do it when your screen will be full for several days.

Syphon it out, and replace with new water.

That way you suck out the crap with the sand and do a water change at the same time.

If there is hydrogen sulfide in the deep part, siphoning will release it and kill the tank. If there are dark/black parts at the bottom, then there will be hyrdrogen sulfide there.

I have a large sandbed I am considering removing as well. I think it makes most sense to take the sump offline, remove all live rock, etc. you want to keep, and then remove the sandbed in one shot. If hydrogen sulfide is present and released it will not affect your tank if your sump is offline. Apparently hydrogen sulfide oxidizes quickly see the following link http://www.saltwateraquariumsupplies.or ... lfide.html.

    Good luck?
