Is vinyl safe to use

I am currently using a lego baseplate and am was thinking about changing to either rug canvas or the knitting mesh. I happened upon a vinyl mesh place mat at the dollar store and it looks like it would be perfect for a new screen. I was just wondering if anyone knows if vinyl would be a safe material to use in a marine environment. Thanks in advance.

I don't know about vinyl, but just make sure that any screen material has holes through it, so the algae can attach.
