Here are a few pics of my DIY LED lights I have done. These parts came from www.rapidled.com and some sources on eBay. The reflective mirror is available from SM and the aluminum 'C' channel was from Lowes. The small light is on my 10G SW the larger tank is a 75G African set-up.

Does keeping the lenses on make much of a difference?

Those in the eves trough are only 120 degree which do not make a huge difference but, the ones that are over the african tank are a 60 degree and they are a significant difference as the make a spot. I ordered many different degree lens so I would have a selection, they are pretty cheap so bought a few different types.
