I have tried this for two weeks and just stopped a couple days ago. I was getting OK growth but my algae way sucking up my Alk (bicarb) and after not seeing much of a difference I stopped. I cant say that I seen any growth difference.

Will help to reduce the water temperature a bit if your overheating but I can't think of any benefits other than that. Other people think differently though.

I'm not Santa but I know what he will say. Dark growth always means not enough light. So what you got shining on your screen?

well my screen measures 14" long by 6" tall has TONS of flow and is lit by 4 (2 each side) 24 watt 2700K spiral CFL's. the reflectors are the "soda can" style but larger because I used 5 gallon buckets cut down with mylar inside them.

Yes it's not enough light. Probably because of the reflectors; you are losing half the light.

I'd fix the reflectors first, so that all of the light hits the screen.
