re-worked scrubber and reef this week!

Due to the new guidelines I re-worked my scrubber!

My new screen measures 7" horz. and 4.75" vert. =33.25 sq." It is lit on both sides by a 26watt outdoor CFL reflector flood 27000 K. My 1000GPH pump only has 12" of head and one 90 deg. fitting and is flowing like crazy! I plan on feeding 2-4 cubes per day on my 45 gallon mixed reef,,,,does this sound good? With my last screen I would always get DARK DARK green but almost black growth,,,I hope to now grow the lime green fluffy algae!

As long as the light is close to the screen (probably 4"), it should work well. 7" wide also give the option of adding extra bulbs.

you only need about 300 GPH of flow. Way too high IMO

is there a drawback to to much flow? It's not like a pressure washer or anything! LOL ?

If the screen isn't rough enough, the algae will have a harder time holding on. If growth gets thick enough, the water flow can tear it away easier even if screen is rough enough IMO.

ok , i will watch out for that. my slot is pretty wide tho. would to much flow cause dark(brownish) growth,,because that is what I have been dealing with, and is what caused me to re-work my screen size and bulbs.?

brown growth is usually caused by lack of light in proportion to nutrients. Increasing flow is usually the 2nd remedy, increasing light the first. Adding Iron to the system would be the 3rd. So if you took what you had before and increased the light, that should help quite a bit.

Now if you're talking about a caramel-colored gooey/spongey growth, that's the "yellow" algae, which is the opposite problem, not enough nutrients and too much light.
