how about a UAS in the pre-filter of a drilled tank, and mount LED lights on the back?

What do you mean in the pre-filter? You mean in the overflow?

ya, mine is rather large and i figured if i add some air filters and a screen with leds on the back it could work no? maybe modify the pipes to have strainers for end caps?

You shouldn't have to modify anything to put a UAS inside an overflow, just drop it in there really.

Dunno. Probably just not the easiest place to access and light.

Not many have big overflows and space for lights behind. But if you have - thats very good choice IMHO.
You have cover rest of space from light well. Or you will have algae all over your overflow everywhere.

I havefound the most challenging design factor for uas is to contain the algae growth in a confined space without restricting flow or making the cleaning process too comPlicated

It was the first time I thought of when I saw the UAS.... I was going to go down this road but after looking into it, but it was going to be very hard to remove each week. Chance of algae coming loose and clogging standpipe, salt creep on the overflow lid, etc. I also have a large overflow in my oceanic tank and its just not worth the risk. I have to admit it would be a great place for a UAS otherwise...
