another question - why did algae get burned by 23w bulb, 2inch away?

is 23w too strong?

Algae retains a "history" of it's growth parameters. It is susceptible to change, like lots of other organisms. Slow changes are best.

smaller wattage bulb.

brown slime still exist.
black hairy algae having a good time.
Feeding is 1 cube.

Try to point the CFL to the middle of the screen.

what about water flow?

More is always better, but I think the tight focus of your light is more of the problem.
