That was awesome. We need more people in this world to think like that.
I was just talking to a co-worker of mine last week about doing something like this.. I have experience/success growing things in hydro, I have tons of lighting experience, and I have arduino experience. I was thinking of moving to Colorado as a 'contractor' and teach those hill billies how to grow proper plants using hydro and LEDs. Aquaponics is a little too much and creates too many uncertainties in the water so I don't think going that far is the right way to do it if your looking for the absolute best yield possible, but in situations like the video illustrates it is a great method. I don't want anything to do with the crops, just the setup aspect of legal indoor grows. Couple in some alternative energy methods (wind, solar, and possibly hydroelectric depending on grow location) I know I could easily double the yields the growers currently get and use at least 1/2 the power. Seems like now is the time to jump on it since it is a new market with potentially a lot of money to be made legally.
I just sold a 90 gallon tank last night to a guy that plans on doing this. He wants to use Tilapia so he can also eat the fish as they get bigger.
I also saw this being done at the fair this year too. My wife actually got interested in aquariums for a minute.
There is a company in Iowa that grows fish and uses plants to filter the water just like this. They say the fish grow faster and end up tastier. I'll have to dig up that article, it was front page of the Des Moines Register within the last year
