Whatever size pipe your overflow normally has should work fine.
Bubbles cause turf screens no problems at all. Down stream you may have issues with them. They do cause salt creep.
My tank is designed around the scrubber. My pipe at the scrubber is larger because that is what the math said. However, I went for "over kill" rather than what would get the job done.
I started by sizing the scrubber to the tank and then calculating the required flow rate. From there, I found the required pipe size for the overflows and used the cross sectional area of the pipes to calculate the area needed inside the slot (the slot needs to flow what the pipes will deliver).
I have two one inch pipes going into my scrubber, so I used 1.5" pipe for the scrubber. (1.25" is large enough to handle the flow of two one inch pipes.)
