Your LEDs are too close and therefore too intense. I guarantee it. You will get zero growth in front of the LED and for probably at least a 1 cm radius circle around it (that's 2cm diameter). You need distance from the screen for the light from the LED to spread out.
I agree with Floyd on the LED distance, its to close.
