The conventional wisdom is the lights should be off for at least 4 hours a day. I'm wondering if there has been any research into higher frequency lighting schedules, such as 5 hours on / 1 hour off or 10 hours on / 2 hours off.

Yes there have been several studies, some posted on here somewhere, that show that more frequent on-off-on schedules might work better. Probably best to just try it.
