    Algae scrubber whitening after cleaning

My waterfall scrubber was working perfect, growing a nice thick mat of algae. It got too thick so I cleaned it.
After the cleaning, the algae I left on the screen started getting white.
The only change was the cleaning, same lights, same intensity and time on/off, flow, etc.
What can I do to stop this from happening every time I clean the scrubber?

If you are sure it's not the white screen under it, then try a more complete cleaning by brushing everything off in your sink, including between the screen holes.

100% sure. The white spots are all algae that got white, coincidentally where the algae is more concentrated and raised further off the screen.
If I clean it all to the bare screen, won't it take a long time for the algae to grow back, hindering the filtering?

What it probably was then was starved algae, where light and flow could not reach deep into it; once it is was cleaned, the new strong light was too much for it.

That's why growth rings help; they keep the middle from getting too thick unless the overall growth is really strong.

So by cleaning more, it won't get thick as quick, and won't cut off flow and light as fast. Or you could make the lights very strong in the middle so you get growth rings.
