    Maybe the slot is expanding (opening more) when heated, and it lets trapped particles out. That would explain why it only happens when there is growth, because the growth would be up into the slot. To test this, put a large light-block over the top 10cm of screen, so that no growth will get anywhere near the pipe. This will also shade the pipe from heating up.
