how does the surf compare to a waterfall? and why don't you have to bring the unit to the sink? (avoid green water)
ho big would a surf need to be for 3 cubes plus 1 oz phyto ?

The main difference is ease of cleaning. Reach in and grab. Green water has not been an issue.
Floating surface upflow scrubbers like the SURF, for 3 cubes, would be 38 square inches. The phyto depends on how thick. So you maybe as well make it for 4 cubes (48 square inches).
ok cool thanks. So I am thinking a 5"x10"x3" container with 2 holes for bubbles,2 drain holes, epoxy and sand/chips substrate, a dozen nylon strings, and maybe 5 three watt red led's and one blue 3 watt?
You more like 30 strings for each bubble hole.
Wow that's a lot of strings! What keeps them from tanging and making it hard to clean?
do you think it would be possible to use the overflow water rather than an air pump? maybe make fixed shallow tray design just above the sump and use a (J) shaped pipe to turn the overflows flow upwards? almost the way a hot spring bubbles out of the ground...If the tray was shalow enough you would have a ton of turblant flow I would think?
ok thanks SM! I have to do something because my current setup does not allow me to put the light where I need it on the screen.
